Chapter 11 - The Man Inside Whitman Technologies

Richard Halpern had worked beside Grant for fifteen years.
He had attended Noah’s birthdays.
Laura’s funeral.
Grant’s wedding to Vanessa.
He had stood beside Grant when Whitman Medical Technologies went public.
Now he appeared on six-year-old footage beside Vanessa hours before Laura died.
Grant did not confront him.
Instead, he audited him.
Quietly.
Within forty-eight hours, Grant’s internal security team found payments from shell companies connected to the Whitman Family Foundation.
Some ended in Vanessa-controlled accounts.
Others ended with Richard.
The amounts totaled 8.4 million dollars.
Laura had discovered the theft.
And perhaps died because of it.
Grant sat in his office staring at the numbers.
Claire stood beside the window.
“Vanessa wasn’t doing this alone.”
“No.”
Grant looked older than he had one week earlier.
“Richard handled every international transfer.”
“He could move money without raising flags.”
“Why kill Laura?”
Grant opened an old email archive.
“Because Laura chaired the foundation.”
“She was preparing an independent audit.”
Claire remembered Laura’s letter.
“She threatened both of them.”
Grant nodded.
His phone buzzed.
Vanessa.
He ignored it.
Then a second message arrived.
You are destroying our family because of a maid and a damaged child.
Grant stared at the screen.
Claire saw his expression change.
Not anger.
Something colder.
He typed back.
Come home tonight.
Claire looked at him.
“What are you doing?”
“Giving her what she wants.”
“You cannot bring her near Noah.”
“I won’t.”
“Noah is staying with Daniel and Emily.”
Claire blinked.
Grant had arranged it already.
“He needs somewhere Vanessa cannot reach him.”
The plan was simple.
Grant would pretend doubt had returned.
He would tell Vanessa the evidence was inconclusive.
He would invite Richard to dinner.
And the entire first floor would be recorded by an independent security team Vanessa did not know existed.
Claire hated it.
But she understood.
At seven thirty, Vanessa arrived wearing red.
At seven forty-five, Richard arrived carrying a bottle of wine.
At eight ten, Grant said the words designed to make guilty people relax.
“Maybe I overreacted.”
Vanessa touched his hand.
Richard exhaled.
Then Grant left the room pretending to take a call.
Hidden in the adjacent office, Claire watched the camera feed.
Vanessa leaned toward Richard.
Her smile disappeared.
“You said the garage copy was destroyed.”
Richard whispered back.
“It was.”
“No.”
Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.
“The maid found something.”
Claire looked at Grant.
They had what they needed.

Then Richard said something even worse.
“If Noah remembers the cliff, we have a bigger problem.”
