Chapter 1 - The Book on the Shelf

“You want this one?” Claire whispered.

Noah’s eyes moved toward the blue picture book on the highest shelf.

Claire reached up and pulled it down.

It was an old children’s book about a lighthouse keeper and a lost boat, its corners worn despite everything else in Noah’s room looking untouched.

The moment Claire placed it on his lap, Noah stopped breathing normally.

His fingers trembled.

Then he opened the book to the middle.

Claire expected him to point at a picture.

Instead, he slid one finger beneath the binding.

Something white was tucked deep inside.

Claire glanced toward the doorway.

The hallway was empty.

She pulled out a folded piece of paper no larger than a postage envelope.

There were only seven words written in shaky pencil.

DON’T LET HER GIVE ME THE BLUE MEDICINE.

Claire’s stomach tightened.

She looked at Noah.

His eyes were filling with tears.

“The blue medicine?” she whispered.

Noah nodded once.

Claire crouched beside him.

“Does Mrs. Whitman give it to you?”

Another nod.

“When?”

His hand moved toward the clock beside his bed.

Then he pointed at the number nine.

Nine at night.

Claire remembered the medication tray she had seen every evening.

Three bottles.

Two white labels.

One small cobalt-blue bottle with no pharmacy sticker.

She had assumed it contained vitamins.

Now she understood why Noah always became strangely drowsy after Vanessa visited his room.

Claire folded the note and slipped it into her apron.

“I believe you,” she said quietly.

Noah stared at her as if no adult had said those words in a very long time.

Then footsteps clicked in the hallway.

Noah froze.

Claire barely had enough time to close the book before Vanessa appeared.

She wore dark glasses pushed into her blond hair and carried two shopping bags from a Boston boutique.

“What are you doing?”

“Dusting the shelves.”

Vanessa looked at the book on Noah’s lap.

Something changed in her face.

Just for a second.

Recognition.

Then irritation.

“That old thing?”

She walked across the room and took it from him.

“Noah knows he isn’t supposed to clutter his room.”

Claire watched Vanessa place the book under her arm.

Noah lowered his eyes.

“Mrs. Whitman,” Claire said carefully.

“Why does Noah receive medication at nine every night?”

Vanessa stopped.

The room went very quiet.

Then she turned.

Her smile returned.

“Because his doctor prescribed it.”

“What medication?”

Vanessa’s eyes hardened.

“You clean this house, Claire.”

She stepped closer.

“You do not practice medicine in it.”

Claire said nothing.

Vanessa leaned down until her voice was almost a whisper.

“And you do not ask questions about my family.”

She left carrying the blue book.

Claire waited until the sound of her heels disappeared.

Then she looked back at Noah.

The boy was staring at her nightstand.

At the digital clock.

8:43 P.M.

May you like

Seventeen minutes until the blue medicine.

And this time, Claire intended to be there.
