Chapter 18 - The Trial
The trial began seven months later.
Vanessa Whitman faced charges related to Laura’s death, conspiracy, child endangerment, unlawful drug administration, kidnapping, financial fraud, and obstruction.
Richard Halpern accepted a plea agreement.
He testified against her.
Samuel Briggs did the same.
Tony Alvarez entered court shaking.
Then played the recording.
Laura’s letter was admitted into evidence.
The garage video followed.
So did Claire’s recording of Vanessa forcing Noah to take the blue liquid.
Lab analysis of residue recovered from Vanessa’s private bathroom revealed the substance.
A powerful sedative not approved for routine pediatric use in the way she had administered it.
Dr. Pierce admitted falsifying Noah’s behavioral reports.
Emily Ross described his early attempts to disclose what he remembered.
Marcus Dean explained the erased security footage.
Then Noah testified.
The courtroom went silent when he entered in his wheelchair.
Grant sat behind the prosecution table.
Claire sat beside him.
Noah looked smaller than everyone else in the room.
But he did not look afraid.
The prosecutor spoke gently.
“Do you know the woman sitting over there?”
Noah looked at Vanessa.
“Yes.”
“Who is she?”
“My stepmother.”
“Did you live with her?”
“Yes.”
“Were you afraid of her?”
Noah swallowed.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Vanessa’s attorneys objected repeatedly.
The judge overruled them.
Noah described the garage.
The night before the crash.
He had woken in the parked SUV while waiting for Laura.
He saw Vanessa crouching beside the front wheel.
Later, during the crash, he remembered Laura screaming that the brakes were gone.
Then remembered waking upside down.
Laura bleeding.
Vanessa standing outside.
Laura begging.
“Call Grant.”
Vanessa taking the phone.
Walking away.
Noah’s voice broke.
Claire covered her mouth.
Grant bowed his head.
The prosecutor asked one final question.
“Why did you stop talking?”
Noah looked directly at Vanessa.
“Because she said if I told Dad, he would die too.”
A sound moved through the courtroom.
Vanessa finally looked away.
