Chapter 9 - AVA’S VOICE

Calvin’s technician restored the digital recorder.
The first file contained only traffic noise.
The second held Ava’s voice.
She sounded frightened.
“Ethan.”
“I do not know whether you will ever hear this.”
“Your father knows I copied the foundation ledger.”
“Sebastian created the shell accounts.”
“Conrad approved the transfers.”
“They used hurricane relief money to purchase private land.”
“They used hospital donations to cover political payments.”
Ethan closed his eyes.
Ava continued.
“I confronted Sebastian.”
“He said the company would survive because people believe wealthy families before they believe catering workers.”
Ava had worked part-time for the Harrington Foundation while completing graduate school.
She discovered invoices that did not match real projects.
Conrad offered her money.
She refused.
Then he threatened Maria and Sofia.
“I am leaving tonight,” Ava said.
“Not because I stopped loving you.”
“I am leaving because your father knows where my family sleeps.”
The recording shifted.
A man’s voice entered the room.
Sebastian.
“You should have taken the money.”
Ava answered.
“You should have built something that did not require stealing from children.”
“You think Ethan will choose you over his father?”
“I think he deserves the chance.”
A door slammed.
The recording continued inside a moving car.
Ava whispered that Sebastian was following her.
Then came a horn.
Brakes.
A violent impact.
The file ended.
Maria covered her mouth.
Ethan stared at the silent recorder.
Sebastian had been near Ava when she died.
He had never mentioned it.
Federal agents examined the audio.
The background noise included the turn signal of a second vehicle.
A transportation specialist identified the model from its warning tone.
The vehicle matched a Harrington company sedan assigned to Sebastian that year.
The crash had been ruled a hit-and-run because Ava’s car was struck from behind before entering an intersection.
Sebastian had not merely helped Conrad frighten her.
He had followed her on the final night of her life.
Whether he intended to kill her remained unproven.
The recording gave investigators enough to reopen the case.
Ethan looked toward Maria.
“I spent eleven years building a company with him.”
“You did not know.”
“I refused to look.”
“That is different.”
“Is it?”
Maria had no simple answer.

People could be deceived without being guilty of the original crime.
They could still become responsible for the years they spent protecting the lie because facing it felt painful.
