Chapter 17 - MARIA RETURNS TO SCHOOL
Maria had left college after Sofia became ill.
She had planned to study nursing.
Hospital bills and childcare replaced textbooks.
After the investigation, Harrington Industries offered her a large settlement.
Maria refused the first agreement.
She read every page.
One clause required confidentiality about workplace failures.
She crossed it out.
Another limited the company’s responsibility for Denise’s conduct.
She crossed that out too.
The final agreement included compensation without silence.
Maria accepted enough to secure a stable home for Lily.
She placed the rest inside an independent fund for low-income working parents facing emergency childcare problems.
Ethan asked what she wanted for herself.
“To return to school.”
He offered to pay.
She shook her head.
“I do not want my future to become another Harrington gift.”
Ethan accepted the boundary.
The new employee fund created an open scholarship program.
Applications were reviewed without names.
Maria applied.
She was accepted on merit.
Her first day of nursing classes began in September.
Lily wore a backpack beside her.
The university childcare center accepted children of students.
Ethan met them outside the building.
He carried Mr. Buttons, who had been repaired again.
“You forgot him,” he told Lily.
She hugged the rabbit.
“Did he miss me?”
“Terribly.”
Maria looked at Ethan.
He wore no suit.
He had stepped down from daily corporate leadership.
His schedule no longer contained meetings every fifteen minutes.
“What are you doing today?” she asked.
“Therapy.”
The honesty surprised her.
“After that?”
“I am learning to cook.”
“That may require more professional help.”
He smiled.
Their relationship had become something careful.
Not romance.
