Chapter 19 - AVA DELGADO DAY

One year after the trial, the city opened the Ava Delgado Center for Corporate Accountability.
The center trained whistleblowers, protected low-income witnesses, and investigated misuse of charitable funds.
Ava’s photograph hung near the entrance.
She was twenty-six in the picture.
Her blue scarf moved in the wind.
Maria spoke at the dedication.
“My sister was not fearless.”
“She was terrified.”
“She made recordings because she believed she might not survive.”
“Courage did not protect her from harm.”
“It protected the truth long enough for someone else to carry it.”
Ethan stood in the front row holding Lily’s hand.
When his turn came, he did not describe Ava as the woman who had loved him.
He described her as the investigator who had exposed a criminal network.
For eleven years, Conrad’s lie had reduced her to a woman who stole money and disappeared.
Ethan would not replace that lie with another story centered only on himself.
“Ava Delgado saw what powerful people assumed no one would question,” he said.
“She refused payment.”
“She refused silence.”
“I failed to reach her when she asked.”
“I cannot change that night.”
“I can make sure the next person does not wait alone.”
The center’s first case involved a hospital contractor stealing funds from pediatric clinics.
Maria volunteered on the review team while continuing nursing school.
Lily placed Mr. Buttons beneath Ava’s photograph.
“Does Aunt Ava need him?” Ethan asked.
“No.”
“She is not scared now.”
“Then why leave him?”

“So people know she had family.”
Maria turned away to hide her tears.
