Chapter 14 - THE PRESS CONFERENCE
Ethan stood inside the Harrington Tower lobby before hundreds of reporters.
Maria and Lily watched from a private office.
Rebecca stood beside him.
Calvin remained near the elevators.
Ethan did not use a prepared corporate statement.
“My father, Conrad Harrington, created fraudulent companies that stole hundreds of millions of dollars from disaster-relief and hospital funds.”
The lobby erupted with questions.
Ethan continued.
“My cousin Sebastian helped operate those companies.”
“Eleven years ago, Ava Delgado discovered the fraud.”
“My father threatened her family.”
“Sebastian followed her on the night she died.”
“I was told Ava stole money and abandoned me.”
“I accepted that story because believing her guilty was easier than questioning the man who raised me.”
The cameras flashed.
“I built Harrington Industries while protecting a lie I did not know was false.”
“But ignorance does not erase the responsibility to act once the truth is known.”
He announced an independent review.
The Harrington Relief Foundation would be dissolved.
All recoverable assets would compensate communities whose funds had been stolen.
The company board would include employee representatives.
No Harrington family member would receive automatic executive authority.
A reporter shouted,
“Are you resigning?”
“Yes.”
The answer shocked Rebecca.
Maria stared at the screen.
Ethan continued.
“I will remain during a six-month transition.”
“Then an independent board will select new leadership.”
“I spent years believing control protected me from abandonment.”
“It only made it easier for dishonest people to remain close.”
Another reporter asked about Maria.
“Did the housekeeper manipulate you into accusing your family?”
Ethan’s expression hardened.
“Maria Delgado did not manipulate me.”
“Her daughter saved my life.”
“Maria preserved a letter my family tried to destroy.”
“She owes Harrington Industries nothing.”
The company’s share price fell immediately.
Several directors resigned.
Clients demanded explanations.
Ethan did not change the statement.
Truth did not become less necessary because it was expensive.
After the press conference, he found Maria in the quiet conference room.
“You resigned,” she said.
“Yes.”
“What will you do?”
“I don’t know.”
“That frightens you.”
“More than the asthma attack.”
Lily climbed onto a chair.
“You can color with me.”
Ethan looked at the crayons.
“I am not very good.”
