Chapter 16 - THE ROOM ETHAN NEVER ENTERED

Ethan returned to his childhood home after Sebastian’s conviction.
The property had remained empty since Conrad’s death.
Maria accompanied him.
Lily stayed with Calvin and Rebecca.
Ethan opened Conrad’s study.
He had avoided the room for years.
The desk remained covered with carefully arranged objects.
A silver pen.
A family photograph.
A locked wooden box.
Maria found a key beneath the false bottom of the blue ledger.
It opened the box.
Inside were Ava’s returned phone messages.
Conrad had recorded them.
The first was frightened.
“Mr. Harrington, please let me speak to Ethan.”
The second was angry.
“You cannot decide for him.”
The final message came from the station.
“Ethan.”
“I’m here.”
“I’ll wait.”
“I know you’re angry.”
“Please come.”
The time stamp showed 11:47 PM.
Ava had waited almost six hours.
Ethan sat in his father’s chair.
For years, he had imagined Ava laughing in another country while he suffered.
In reality, she had stood beneath a station clock, calling a number Conrad controlled.
Maria placed one hand on the desk.
“My mother blamed herself too.”
“For keeping the letter?”
“For being afraid.”
“She said courage always seemed obvious after danger passed.”
Ethan looked at her.
“Do you blame her?”
“No.”
“I wish she had made another choice.”
“Both can be true.”
Ethan nodded.
He picked up the family photograph.
Conrad stood behind him with one hand on his shoulder.
The image once represented strength.
Now Ethan saw possession.
His father had not wanted a son capable of choosing love over the Harrington name.
He wanted an heir who believed the family story before trusting his own heart.
Ethan placed the photograph facedown.
“I do not want this house.”
“What will you do with it?”
He looked toward the locked study.
“Open it.”
The property became a legal center for employees reporting corporate abuse.
