Chapter 11 - THE EMPTY LINEN ROOM

Maria had returned to Harrington Tower only to collect her belongings.
Federal investigators approved the visit.
Calvin escorted her.
Lily remained beside him while Maria entered Denise’s former office.
The power failed without warning.
Emergency lights turned the hallway red.
Calvin reached for Lily.
The child was no longer beside him.
A service-elevator door closed at the far end.
“Lily.”
He ran.
The control panel had been disabled.
Maria heard him shout.
She dropped the box in her arms.
“What happened?”
“She was right here.”
Calvin checked the hallway camera.
The last image showed Denise stepping from the stairwell.
Although under federal cooperation, Denise had been released under supervision.
Someone had helped her enter the tower.
She had taken Lily into the elevator.
Maria’s phone rang.
Sebastian’s voice came through the speaker.
“Tell Ethan to dismiss the investigators.”
Maria’s blood turned cold.
“Where is my daughter?”
“Safe for now.”
“If he does not sign the control transfer, the elevator’s emergency ventilation will stop.”
“You will kill a three-year-old?”
“I will blame the power failure.”
Maria began recording the call.
“You blamed Ava’s crash too.”
Sebastian became silent.
Then he answered.
“Ava made a choice.”
“She ran from me.”
“You followed her.”
“She had company property.”
“She had evidence.”
“She panicked at the intersection.”
“You hit her.”
“I touched the rear bumper.”
“She lost control.”
Maria closed her eyes.
The confession had come from arrogance.
Sebastian still believed explanation reduced guilt.
“What does Lily have to do with any of this?”
“She saw me near Ethan’s office.”
“She gave him the inhaler.”
“She turned a manageable situation into a disaster.”
“She saved his life.”
“That was the disaster.”
The call ended.
Calvin accessed an old mechanical map.
The service elevator had stopped between floors thirty-nine and forty.
The maintenance shaft could be entered from the roof equipment room.
Maria reached for the stairwell.
Calvin stopped her.
“It is forty floors.”
“That is my child.”
They climbed.
Inside the elevator, Lily sat on the floor with Mr. Buttons.
Denise stood near the control panel.
Tears ran down her face.
“I did not know he would stop the air.”
Lily looked at her.
“You are the mean office lady.”
Denise covered her mouth.
“Yes.”
May you like
The ventilation fan slowed.
The temperature inside the metal box began rising.
