Chapter 9 - THE FALSE CONFESSION

By noon, the forged contract had reached the press.
Harold Price claimed Elena had been paid to spy on Adrian.
He released copies to three television networks.
He also produced a video.
In it, Elena appeared to sit inside a dim hotel room.
Her face was pale.
Her voice shook.
“I was hired to get close to Adrian Vale.”
The video continued.
“I lied about the Rolex because I wanted his wife removed.”
Elena watched the recording from Adrian’s study.
“That isn’t me.”
The face looked exactly like hers.
The voice sounded exactly like hers.
Even the nervous habit of touching her left thumb had been copied.
Adrian moved closer to the screen.
“It is a synthetic video.”
Elena looked at him.
“Can you prove it?”
His silence answered her.
MirrorSight had begun as a facial recognition system.
Damien had combined it with generative software capable of creating convincing video from stolen surveillance footage.
He had recorded Elena throughout the mansion for almost two years.
He knew how she moved.
He knew how she spoke.
He had enough data to manufacture a confession.
The video spread faster than the original camera footage.
People preferred the new story.
A poor nanny seducing a billionaire was more entertaining than a wealthy woman framing an employee.
Celeste appeared on television that evening.
She spoke softly about betrayal.
She claimed she had tried to protect Sophie.
She claimed Adrian had become emotionally dependent on Elena.
She claimed the shove occurred only because Elena attempted to run.
The actual footage contradicted her.
It did not matter.
Harold Price flooded the public with so many versions of the truth that certainty became impossible.
Then Rosa called.
Elena nearly dropped the phone.
“Where are you?”
“I’m okay.”
Rosa sounded frightened.
“Are you alone?”
“No.”
A man took the phone.
Damien Cross’s voice was calm and unaltered.
“Elena, your sister chose to cooperate.”
“You kidnapped her.”
“She entered the car voluntarily.”
“You lied to her.”
“Lies are simply truths people accept too late.”
Elena gripped the desk.
“What do you want?”
“The watch.”
“The police have it.”
“The police have a copy.”
Adrian’s eyes narrowed.
Damien continued.
“Arthur Vale never trusted digital security alone.”
“He hid the final access sequence inside the watch.”
Adrian looked toward Marcus.
Marcus opened the police evidence photographs.
The Rolex caseback contained faint engraved numbers.
Adrian had always assumed they were repair markings.
They were part of the encryption key.
Damien needed the physical watch to unlock MirrorSight’s complete archive.
“Bring it to the Cross Foundation warehouse tonight,” Damien said.
“Elena comes alone.”
Adrian reached for the phone.
Damien heard the movement.
“Mr. Vale, I know you are listening.”
“If police enter the building, Rosa disappears.”
“If security drones approach, she disappears.”
“If Elena does not arrive by midnight, the next video will show her confessing to Sophie’s kidnapping.”
The call ended.
Adrian immediately said no.
Elena did not argue.
She waited until he left the room to speak with federal agents.
Then she turned toward Sophie’s tablet.
Sophie had once shown her how to access the mansion’s hidden service tunnels through the home-control app.
The tunnels had been built during the original estate construction.
One exited beyond the eastern wall.
Elena placed a pillow beneath her blanket.
She changed into dark clothes.
At 10:35 p.m., she entered the service corridor alone.
When Adrian returned to her room, the window was locked.
The guards remained outside the door.
The bed appeared occupied.
He did not discover the truth until Sophie spoke from behind him.
“Elena went to save Rosa.”
Adrian pulled back the blanket.
The bed was empty.
On the pillow was a note.

DO NOT FOLLOW ME.
For the first time in his life, Adrian Vale obeyed no one.
