Chapter 8 - THE WOMAN SHE HAD PURCHASED

Elena’s mother had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer three years earlier.
Treatment costs consumed everything the family owned.
Elena left college.
She worked nights at a hotel and mornings at a daycare center.
One afternoon, a representative from the Cross Foundation called.
The woman said an anonymous donor had covered the remaining hospital balance.
Two weeks later, Elena received an interview request from the Vale household.
She thought it was a miracle.
It had been recruitment.
Monica reviewed the foundation records.
Celeste had accessed Elena’s financial history before Adrian hired her.
She had also paid the employment agency that recommended Elena.
“She wanted someone vulnerable,” Elena said.
Adrian looked sick.
“She wanted someone she could control.”
“She thought my gratitude would make me loyal to her.”
Elena remembered every strange favor.
Celeste giving her unused designer clothes.
Celeste offering to help her sister find work.
Celeste asking questions about hospital debt.
Every gift had been a reminder.
Every kindness had carried an invisible price.
Adrian sat across from Elena.
“I should have known.”
“You were not the one who paid the bills.”
“I signed the employment contract.”
“You trusted your wife.”
“I failed to verify why she was interested in you.”
Elena’s voice softened.
“She was very good at pretending.”
“So was I.”
Adrian looked toward Sophie’s drawing on the table.
“I pretended everything in this house was secure because I controlled the locks.”
Elena studied him.
For the first time, she saw more than the billionaire who commanded rooms without raising his voice.
She saw a father realizing wealth had not protected his child.
It had attracted people who viewed her as an asset.
A new message arrived on Elena’s phone.
It contained a photograph of her sister, Rosa, leaving work.
Beneath it were six words.
THE DEBT HAS NOT BEEN FORGOTTEN.
Adrian immediately ordered security to bring Rosa to the estate.
Elena called her sister.
Rosa answered on the second ring.
“I’m already in a car.”
Elena’s blood ran cold.
“What car?”
“A driver from Mr. Vale’s office picked me up.”
Adrian turned toward Marcus.
Marcus shook his head.
He had sent no driver.
“Rosa, get out of the car.”
The line crackled.
“What?”
“Open the door.”
“It’s locked.”
Elena heard the driver speaking in the background.
Then the call ended.
Marcus traced Rosa’s phone.
It was moving east on Sunset Boulevard.
Adrian’s security vehicles launched from the estate.
Police were notified.
Elena climbed into Adrian’s car before anyone could stop her.
“You are staying here,” Adrian said.
“She is my sister.”
“You are also a target.”
“Then they will expect me to hide.”
Adrian stared at her for one second.
Then he closed the door and told the driver to move.
They followed the signal through West Hollywood.
Rosa’s phone turned south.
Then east again.
Finally, it stopped inside an underground parking garage beneath the Cross Foundation headquarters.
Marcus’s team entered from the lower level.
Police approached from the street.
Adrian and Elena waited in the armored vehicle.
Five minutes passed.
Then ten.
Marcus’s voice came through the radio.
“We found the car.”
Elena held her breath.
“It’s empty.”
Rosa’s phone lay on the back seat.
Beside it was a folded document.
The document was Elena’s original employment contract.
On the final page, beneath a paragraph she had never seen, was her signature.
The hidden paragraph stated that Elena had accepted fifty thousand dollars to obtain private information from Adrian Vale.
