Chapter 1 - THE WATCH ON THE MARBLE FLOOR

Elena Marquez hit the marble floor hard enough to knock the air from her lungs.

The silver tray she had been carrying spun away from her hands.

A glass of lemon water shattered beside the staircase.

Six-year-old Sophie Vale screamed from the doorway.

Celeste Vale stood over Elena in a cream Chanel dress, her perfectly manicured hand still extended from the shove.

“You little thief,” Celeste hissed.

Elena pressed one trembling palm against the cold floor.

“I didn’t take anything.”

Celeste reached into the pocket of Elena’s faded cardigan.

Her smile appeared before her hand came out.

Then she held up a vintage gold Rolex.

The watch glittered beneath the chandelier.

Adrian Vale stopped at the entrance of the living room.

The billionaire had returned from a board meeting ten minutes early.

His dark suit was still buttoned.

His phone remained in one hand.

His expression revealed nothing.

Celeste turned toward her husband with tears already forming in her eyes.

“I caught her trying to leave with your father’s watch.”

Elena’s face drained of color.

She had cared for Sophie for almost two years.

She had slept beside the little girl’s bed during fevers.

She had carried her through nightmares.

She had never taken so much as an extra piece of fruit from the kitchen.

“Mr. Vale, please.”

Elena struggled to stand.

“I swear I’ve never seen that watch before.”

Celeste moved closer to Adrian.

“She has been watching our things for months.”

“That isn’t true,” Elena whispered.

Celeste looked toward Sophie.

“Go upstairs.”

Sophie did not move.

“She didn’t take it.”

Celeste’s eyes sharpened.

“You don’t understand what happened.”

“I saw you put something in her sweater,” Sophie said.

The room became silent.

Celeste laughed too quickly.

“She’s confused.”

Adrian finally looked down at his phone.

Celeste stepped closer and lowered her voice.

“You cannot seriously believe the nanny over your wife.”

Adrian said nothing.

He touched the screen once.

The enormous television above the fireplace turned black.

Then security footage appeared.

The video showed Elena entering the room with the tray.

It showed Celeste removing the Rolex from a velvet box.

It showed her glancing toward the hallway.

It showed her sliding the watch into Elena’s cardigan pocket.

Celeste’s smile disappeared.

The footage continued.

Celeste waited until Elena turned around.

Then she shoved her with both hands.

The impact sent Elena directly onto the marble.

Adrian paused the recording.

Celeste stared at the television.

“That camera wasn’t there yesterday.”

“It has been there for three years,” Adrian said.

His voice was terrifyingly calm.

Celeste opened her mouth.

No words came out.

Adrian walked past her and helped Elena to her feet.

Then he looked at the shattered glass.

He looked at his frightened daughter.

Finally, he looked at his wife.

“You accused an innocent woman of a felony.”

Celeste’s lips trembled.

“It was a misunderstanding.”

“You planted my father’s watch in her pocket.”

“I can explain.”

“You shoved her in front of my daughter.”

Celeste’s fear turned into anger.

“She is turning Sophie against me.”

Adrian raised his phone again.

“You have ten minutes to call your attorney.”

Celeste blinked.

“What?”

“The police are already on their way.”

Her face twisted.

“You would humiliate your own wife over a servant?”

Adrian stepped closer.

“The woman you assaulted has a name.”

Celeste stared at him.

Adrian’s next words landed harder than any shout.

“And after tonight, you will no longer have mine.”

Celeste’s eyes moved toward the television.

The security footage was still paused on her hand inside Elena’s pocket.

But Adrian had not yet played the final thirty seconds.

May you like

Those thirty seconds contained something far more dangerous than a planted Rolex.

They contained the real reason Celeste had chosen Elena.
