Chapter 12 - THE CAR THAT WOULD NOT TURN

Elena pressed the brake.

Nothing happened.

The car accelerated through the intersection.

Horns exploded around her.

Rosa screamed from the passenger seat.

“The wheel won’t move.”

Elena pulled the emergency brake.

The vehicle slowed for one second.

Then the system released it electronically.

Adrian watched the live map from his study.

Damien sent another message.

MIRRORSIGHT DOES NOT JUST WATCH PEOPLE.

IT CONTROLS WHAT WATCHES THEM.

Adrian called Elena.

Her voice came through the speakers.

“The car is driving itself.”

“Stay calm.”

“I am calm.”

She sounded furious rather than frightened.

“What do I do?”

Adrian opened the vehicle’s engineering interface through Vale Technologies.

The car was not manufactured by his company, but its autonomous system used Vale navigation chips.

Damien had exploited a maintenance channel.

Adrian attempted to disconnect it.

Access denied.

He tried again with an emergency command.

The system rejected him.

Marcus tracked the car toward an unfinished bridge ramp near downtown.

“They have three minutes.”

Adrian looked at the architecture map.

The maintenance channel could not be disabled remotely.

It could only be interrupted by physically breaking power to the navigation control.

“Elena, open the panel below the glove compartment.”

Rosa pulled at the cover.

“It is screwed shut.”

“Use the metal buckle from the seat belt.”

Elena kept both hands near the useless wheel while Rosa tore at the panel.

The car ran a red light.

A truck missed them by inches.

Rosa removed the cover.

Dozens of wires filled the opening.

“Which one?”

Adrian studied the diagram.

“Find a blue cable with two white stripes.”

“There are three blue cables.”

“The one closest to the firewall.”

Rosa reached deeper.

The bridge ramp appeared ahead.

Concrete barriers blocked both sides.

The unfinished section ended in darkness.

“Now,” Adrian said.

Rosa pulled the cable.

Nothing happened.

The car continued accelerating.

“You said it would stop.”

Adrian’s eyes moved across the diagram.

Damien had rerouted the control.

“Red cable.”

“Which red cable?”

“All of them.”

Rosa grabbed the bundle and pulled.

Sparks burst beneath the dashboard.

The engine shut down.

The steering wheel unlocked.

Elena turned hard.

The car struck the concrete barrier sideways.

Airbags exploded.

The vehicle stopped six feet from the unfinished edge.

For several seconds, neither woman moved.

Adrian heard only the warning chime through the phone.

“Elena.”

She coughed.

“We’re here.”

His knees weakened.

Police and paramedics arrived minutes later.

Elena suffered bruising across her chest.

Rosa needed stitches above one eyebrow.

Both survived.

Damien released a statement through an anonymous account.

He claimed Vale Technologies had lost control of its own vehicles.

The company’s stock fell twelve percent before the market closed.

Government regulators demanded answers.

Board members called an emergency meeting.

Several suggested Adrian temporarily resign.

Celeste’s plan was working.

She was attacking his marriage.

His daughter.

His company.

And his credibility.

At the hospital, Elena watched the financial news.

“You should step down.”

Adrian stared at her.

“You think she should win?”

“I think Sophie needs a father who is not fighting ten wars at once.”

“This company is her future.”

“She is six.”

“That does not make the people stealing from her less dangerous.”

Elena reached for his hand.

It was the first time she had touched him without necessity.

“Then stop fighting the story they created.”

“Find the truth they are afraid of.”

Adrian looked at her fingers around his.

He suddenly understood.

Damien could manufacture videos.

Celeste could manipulate headlines.

But neither had destroyed the original MirrorSight archive.

They needed the Rolex because the archive contained evidence even they could not alter.

Arthur Vale had hidden the final sequence somewhere inside the watch.

The police still held the original Rolex.

Adrian called Rebecca.

When she opened the evidence case, the watch was gone.

May you like

In its place was the same replica Elena had carried into the warehouse.

Someone inside law enforcement had made the exchange.
