Chapter 5 – The Woman Behind the Curtain

The courtroom was already overflowing before sunrise.
Television crews lined the front steps.
Reporters filled every available seat.
Curious spectators crowded the back rows, whispering as they waited for one of the most anticipated hearings of the year.
When the courtroom doors opened, every head turned.
Isabella Rossi entered wearing a tailored navy suit instead of the glamorous designer gowns she usually favored.
Her hair was neatly tied back.
No expensive jewelry.
No confident smile.
She wanted to look like an ordinary woman caught in extraordinary circumstances.
It was a performance.
And she had spent her entire life mastering performances.
Daniel Cross leaned closer.
"Remember."
She nodded.
"Say as little as possible."
Judge Eleanor Whitfield entered precisely at nine o'clock.
The room fell silent.
"The State versus Isabella Marie Rossi."
The judge adjusted her glasses.
"Counsel, are both sides prepared?"
"We are, Your Honor," Assistant District Attorney Rebecca Mills answered.
Daniel stood.
"The defense is ready."
The hearing had begun.
At Hale Medical Center, Marcus refused to watch the live broadcast.
His place was beside Khloe.
She looked stronger than she had the previous day, though the bruises along her side had deepened into dark shades of purple and blue.
The baby kicked gently beneath her hand.
Marcus smiled for the first time in days.
"Our little one is stubborn."
Khloe laughed softly.
"I hope that comes from you."
Richard entered carrying fresh coffee.
"I've just spoken with Detective Bennett."
Marcus looked up.
"Any news?"
Richard placed a folder on the table.
"They found the anonymous caller."
Marcus stood immediately.
"The man who said Isabella had other victims?"
Richard nodded.
"His name is Andrew Collins."
Marcus searched his memory.
"I don't know him."
"You wouldn't."
"He spent six years as chief accountant for the Rossi Foundation."
Khloe's expression changed.
"He worked for Isabella?"
Richard nodded again.
"Until he discovered millions of dollars disappearing through shell companies."
Marcus frowned.
"So why didn't he go to the police?"
Richard looked out the window.
"Because two weeks after confronting Isabella..."
"...his wife died in what police ruled a traffic accident."
Silence filled the room.
Khloe whispered,
"You think it wasn't an accident."
Richard didn't answer directly.
"I think Andrew has lived in fear ever since."
Across town...
Andrew Collins sat inside a modest apartment, staring at the television.
His phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
He ignored it.
It buzzed again.
And again.
Finally, he answered.
No one spoke.
Only breathing.
Then a calm female voice said,
"You should have stayed silent."
The call ended.
Andrew's hands trembled.
He walked to his bedroom closet.
Reached behind an old wooden shelf.
Pulled out a small fireproof box.
Inside was a flash drive.
On its label were four handwritten words.
FOR THE RIGHT TIME.
He looked toward the television.
Maybe...
That time had finally come.
Back in court...
Rebecca Mills stood before the judge.
"The prosecution requests that bail be denied."
Daniel objected immediately.
"My client has no criminal history."
Rebecca nodded.
"She also possesses extraordinary financial resources, multiple international contacts, and access to private aircraft."
The judge listened carefully.
Rebecca continued.
"And most importantly..."
"...the victim remains hospitalized."
Daniel rose again.
"The defense disputes the characterization of these events."
Rebecca pressed a button on the courtroom monitor.
"I anticipated that."
The screen lit up.
A still image.
Hospital Suite 1701.
Khloe standing alone.
Isabella entering.
The courtroom erupted into whispers.
Daniel's face turned pale.
Rebecca spoke calmly.
"The full recording has not yet been entered into evidence."
"But the Court should understand that the State possesses extensive surveillance footage."
She looked directly at Isabella.
"Footage that speaks for itself."
For the first time since her arrest...
Isabella lowered her eyes.
She realized something terrifying.
The prosecution wasn't bluffing.
During a recess...
Detective Laura Bennett hurried toward Rebecca.
"We have another development."
Rebecca frowned.
"What happened?"
Laura handed her a printed email.
"It arrived fifteen minutes ago."
No sender.
No signature.
Only one sentence.
The woman you're looking for isn't Isabella.
Rebecca looked confused.
"What woman?"
Laura turned over the page.
A photograph had been attached.
An elegant woman in her sixties.
Silver hair.
Sharp green eyes.
Standing beside Antonio Rossi twenty-two years earlier.
Rebecca read the handwritten caption beneath it.
Catherine Vale.
"Who is she?"
Laura answered quietly.
"The woman who financed Antonio Rossi's biggest expansion."
Rebecca looked again.
"Where is she now?"
Laura met her eyes.
"Nobody knows."
Meanwhile...
In the underground parking garage beneath the courthouse...
A black sedan waited with its engine running.
Inside sat a woman wearing dark sunglasses despite the dim lighting.
She watched Isabella being escorted back toward the holding area.
A faint smile appeared on her lips.
"So..."
she whispered,
"you're finally where I always knew you'd end up."
The driver glanced in the mirror.
"Should we proceed?"
She nodded once.
"Phase Two."
The sedan quietly pulled away.
Neither Isabella...
nor Marcus...
nor the prosecutors...
had any idea they were all chasing the wrong enemy.
Someone far more dangerous had been manipulating every piece on the board for decades.
That evening...
Khloe stood carefully beside the hospital window, watching the sun disappear beyond the skyline.
Marcus wrapped a blanket around her shoulders.
"You should rest."
"In a minute."
She leaned against him.
"Do you ever wonder if revenge can become a disease?"
Marcus looked at her.
"What do you mean?"
She watched the lights flicker across the city.
"If Isabella truly believed we destroyed her family..."
"...then somewhere along the way she stopped searching for the truth."
Marcus remained silent.
Khloe continued.
"She only searched for someone to blame."
Before Marcus could answer...
Richard's phone rang.
He listened for less than thirty seconds.
His expression changed completely.
"What is it?" Marcus asked.
Richard slowly lowered the phone.
"The anonymous woman from the parking garage..."
Marcus frowned.
"What about her?"
Richard's voice became almost a whisper.
"She just purchased every outstanding debt connected to the old Rossi Holdings bankruptcy."
Khloe blinked.
"After twenty years?"
Richard nodded.
"And she paid cash."
Marcus stared at him.
"Who would spend hundreds of millions of dollars on a debt that no longer matters?"
Richard looked toward the darkening skyline.
"I don't know."
"But whoever she is..."
"...she's preparing for something."
Far above the city...
Inside the penthouse of an unfinished skyscraper...
The silver-haired woman stood alone, looking down at New York.
On a table beside her rested dozens of photographs.
Marcus.
Khloe.
Richard.
Isabella.
Detective Bennett.
Andrew Collins.
One by one...
She turned each photograph face down.
Only one remained.
A faded picture of a little girl standing beside Antonio Rossi.
She smiled sadly.
"Forgive me, Isabella."
"I taught you to hate the wrong people."
Then she dropped the photograph into the fireplace.
As the flames consumed the last image...
she whispered the name no one had spoken in twenty years.
May you like
"Your real enemy..."
"...has finally come home."
