Chapter 10 – The Man Everyone Thought Was Dead

Richard Hale stared at the name on William Thorne's letter as though he had seen a ghost.
Jonathan Mercer.
For nearly thirty years, he had buried that name so deeply in his memory that he had convinced himself it no longer mattered.
He was wrong.
Marcus noticed the change immediately.
"You know him."
Richard remained silent.
"Richard."
Khloe gently touched his arm.
"Please."
He slowly lowered himself into a chair.
"I knew him."
"No..."
He corrected himself.
"We all did."
Twenty-eight years earlier...
Jonathan Mercer had been one of the brightest financial minds in New York.
Brilliant.
Charming.
Relentlessly ambitious.
He and William Thorne had founded an investment company together shortly after graduating from business school.
Richard had served as their attorney.
The three men had been inseparable.
"They were like brothers," Richard said quietly.
Marcus listened without interrupting.
"But Jonathan wanted more."
"What do you mean?" Khloe asked.
"He believed loyalty was a weakness."
Richard folded his hands.
"When William refused to manipulate investors and falsify company records..."
"...Jonathan disappeared."
Marcus frowned.
"I've never heard his name."
"You weren't supposed to."
Richard looked toward Catherine.
"Because six months later..."
"...everyone believed he died in a private plane crash over the Atlantic."
Marcus turned toward Catherine.
"And he didn't?"
She slowly shook her head.
"No."
"The crash was staged."
Silence filled the room.
Laura Bennett, standing near the door, exchanged a glance with the FBI agents.
This case had just become something much bigger than an assault investigation.
Catherine looked at Marcus.
"Jonathan spent the next twenty years building an empire no one knew existed."
Marcus frowned.
"What kind of empire?"
"Debt."
She answered without hesitation.
"He bought failing companies."
"He created financial crises."
"He bribed officials."
"And whenever families became desperate..."
"...he took everything."
Richard closed his eyes.
"I suspected."
"But I could never prove it."
Marcus picked up his father's letter again.
The next paragraph read:
Jonathan told me once that destroying a family was more profitable than buying a company.
Marcus's jaw tightened.
Another paragraph.
If anything happens to me, trust Richard. Never trust anyone who profits from tragedy.
Marcus looked up.
"My father knew."
Richard nodded sadly.
"He knew enough to be afraid."
Across the city...
Inside the detention center...
Victor Rossi finished telling Isabella everything he had hidden for decades.
"I followed Jonathan Mercer."
Isabella blinked.
"You knew him?"
"I worked for him."
The words hit her like a physical blow.
"You what?"
Victor lowered his head.
"I didn't know who he really was."
"I believed I was helping investors recover bankrupt companies."
His voice cracked.
"I didn't realize..."
"...we were creating the bankruptcies."
Tears filled Isabella's eyes.
"My father..."
Victor nodded.
"Antonio trusted Jonathan."
"He trusted Catherine."
"They both believed they were saving the company."
Instead...
they had walked directly into a trap.
Isabella covered her face.
"I destroyed an innocent family."
Victor reached across the table.
"No."
"You were manipulated."
She looked up sharply.
"I still attacked Khloe."
Victor didn't argue.
"No one forced you to do that."
The silence that followed was painful.
For the first time since her arrest...
Isabella stopped blaming everyone else.
She blamed herself.
Meanwhile...
FBI forensic analysts examined William Thorne's letter.
One technician hurried into the conference room.
"We found something."
Laura looked up.
"What?"
"The ink."
Everyone stared.
"It wasn't written all at once."
Marcus frowned.
"What do you mean?"
The technician placed enlarged photographs on the table.
"The first page was written twenty-two years ago."
"The final page..."
He paused.
"...was written less than three weeks before William Thorne died."
Richard slowly stood.
"He kept updating it."
The technician nodded.
"As he learned more."
Marcus turned to the last page.
At the bottom, beneath his father's signature, was a final handwritten sentence.
Jonathan will come back when everyone believes the war is over.
Late that evening...
Khloe sat alone in the garden outside the FBI safe house where she and Marcus were temporarily staying.
The baby kicked gently.
She smiled.
"You've certainly chosen an interesting family."
Marcus joined her carrying two cups of tea.
"You shouldn't be outside long."
"I needed air."
She looked up at the stars.
"So much hate..."
Marcus nodded.
"And none of it started with us."
Before either could speak again...
Laura hurried across the lawn.
She looked pale.
"What happened?" Marcus asked.
"We identified Jonathan Mercer's financial network."
Richard stepped outside behind her.
"How large?"
Laura hesitated.
Then quietly answered,
"He controls assets worth over forty billion dollars."
Marcus stared at her.
"Forty..."
Laura nodded.
"And that's only what we can trace."
She took a deep breath.
"There's something else."
"What?"
She handed Marcus a photograph.
Security footage.
Taken less than two hours earlier.
Marcus looked at it.
His blood ran cold.
Standing outside the gate of the Thorne estate...
wearing a dark overcoat and looking directly into the camera...
was a man in his late sixties.
The timestamp had been verified.
The facial recognition report read:
99.8% MATCH
JONATHAN MERCER
Across the bottom of the image, investigators noticed something chilling.
He wasn't looking at the house.
He was smiling.
May you like
As if he wanted them to know...
he had finally returned.
