Chapter 3 – The Woman in the Photograph

The hospital room was silent except for the steady rhythm of the fetal heart monitor.

Marcus sat beside Khloe's bed, but his attention remained fixed on the thick file Richard had left behind.

ROSSI.

Hundreds of pages.

Hundreds of secrets.

He opened it again.

The first page contained a photograph of Isabella standing beside an elderly billionaire during a charity gala twelve years earlier.

She looked almost identical.

Elegant.

Confident.

Beautiful.

Only her smile was different.

It was genuine.

Or at least it appeared to be.

Beneath the picture was another document.

Harold Kensington.

Age: 78.

Founder of Kensington Energy.

Net worth: $3.8 billion.

Status: Deceased.

Cause of death: Heart failure.

Marcus frowned.

"What does this have to do with Isabella?"

Richard folded his arms.

Marcus turned the page.

There were emails.

Hotel reservations.

Bank transfers.

Private photographs.

Every document was organized by date.

Then came a handwritten note.

"Three months before Mr. Kensington changed his will, Isabella Rossi became his personal charity advisor."

Marcus's expression darkened.

Another page.

"Six weeks before his death, his only daughter was removed from the will."

Another.

"Three days after the funeral, Isabella received twelve million dollars through offshore accounts."

Marcus slowly looked up.

"Was she charged?"

Richard shook his head.

"No."

"There wasn't enough evidence."

"So why keep the file?"

Richard's answer came without hesitation.

"Because I knew she'd do it again."

Across the city...

Isabella walked into the Rossi Foundation headquarters with her usual confidence.

Employees immediately stood as she passed.

"Good morning, Ms. Rossi."

She barely acknowledged them.

Instead, she headed directly toward the executive conference room.

Daniel was already waiting.

He looked exhausted.

"We have a problem."

She closed the door.

"Only one?"

He didn't smile.

"The Attorney General froze three of your accounts."

Her face remained calm.

"Temporary."

"Federal investigators searched your offices."

"They found nothing."

Daniel slid a folder across the table.

"They found copies."

She froze.

"What copies?"

"The accounting records you ordered destroyed last year."

Her heartbeat quickened.

"That's impossible."

"I watched them burn."

Daniel leaned closer.

"Apparently..."

"...someone made duplicates."

For the first time in years...

Isabella felt something unfamiliar.

She wasn't losing control.

She had already lost it.

Meanwhile...

At Hale Medical Center...

Detective Laura Bennett returned carrying another tablet.

"We finished interviewing the hospital staff."

Marcus stood.

"Did anyone support Isabella's story?"

Laura shook her head.

"No."

"Actually..."

She tapped the screen.

"We found something interesting."

A second security recording appeared.

Not inside the suite.

Outside.

Hallway Camera Four.

Time stamp: 7:39 p.m.

Isabella was standing outside Khloe's room.

Alone.

Looking around carefully.

Then...

She removed a pair of leather gloves from her purse.

Put them on.

And entered the room.

Marcus stared silently.

Laura paused the video.

"People acting in self-defense don't usually prepare first."

Richard nodded.

"Premeditation."

Laura agreed.

"Exactly."

She played the next clip.

Eight minutes later...

Marcus arrived.

Only seconds before security.

Only seconds before the doctors.

Laura looked at Marcus.

"If you had been delayed another minute..."

She didn't finish the sentence.

She didn't need to.

Everyone in the room already understood.

That afternoon...

The media finally obtained the first leaked photograph.

Not of Khloe.

Not of the hospital.

A picture of Isabella leaving police headquarters.

Within minutes, every major news outlet began asking the same question.

"Why was one of New York's most celebrated philanthropists questioned by detectives?"

Television analysts speculated.

Social media exploded.

Supporters defended her.

Critics demanded answers.

Hashtags spread across the internet.

#JusticeForKhloe

#ArrestIsabella

#WhatReallyHappened

But nobody had seen the surveillance footage.

Not yet.

Late that evening...

Khloe finally felt strong enough to sit by the window.

Marcus helped her into a chair.

"You should still be resting."

She smiled faintly.

"I was never very good at resting."

He knelt beside her.

"I'm sorry."

She touched his face.

"For what?"

"I brought Isabella into our lives."

Marcus's voice was heavy with regret.

"I trusted her."

Khloe looked out at the city lights.

"I kept asking myself why she hated me."

She paused.

"I thought maybe I had done something wrong."

Marcus immediately shook his head.

"You didn't."

She looked back at him.

"Then why?"

Before Marcus could answer...

Richard entered.

His expression was unusually serious.

"I think we finally know."

He handed Marcus another photograph.

This one was much older.

Nearly twenty-five years old.

A charity banquet.

Richard was there.

Marcus's late father was there.

Several business leaders stood together.

Near the edge of the picture...

A little girl.

Maybe six years old.

Standing beside a young couple.

Marcus frowned.

"Who's that?"

Richard pointed.

"That's Isabella."

Marcus looked again.

Then at the couple beside her.

"They're her parents?"

Richard nodded slowly.

"Your father ruined them."

Silence.

Marcus looked stunned.

"What?"

Richard took a slow breath.

"It's more complicated than that."

"No."

Marcus replied quietly.

"Start from the beginning."

Richard pulled out a chair.

"I think it's time both of you learned why Isabella Rossi has spent twenty years trying to destroy this family."

Outside the hospital...

A black SUV remained parked across the street.

Inside sat a man wearing a dark baseball cap.

He lifted a camera with a long lens.

Click.

Another photograph of Khloe through the hospital window.

Click.

Another photograph of Marcus.

Then he picked up his phone.

"They're together."

A woman's voice answered calmly.

"Good."

The photographer hesitated.

"I thought Isabella was handling this."

The woman laughed softly.

"So did Isabella."

The call ended.

The photographer looked back toward the hospital.

Someone else had entered the game.

Someone Isabella herself didn't know existed.

And somewhere inside New York...

A woman opened an old newspaper clipping.

Across the front page was a headline from twenty years earlier.

THORNE INDUSTRIES ACQUIRES ROSSI HOLDINGS.

She gently touched the faded photograph.

Then whispered to herself,

May you like

"This time..."

"...the entire Thorne family pays."
