Chapter 2 – A Family That Never Forgave

The news reached the city before midnight.
Not because reporters had discovered it.
Because someone wanted them to.
Outside Hale Medical Center, satellite trucks lined the street beneath flashing red and blue lights. Reporters whispered into cameras, trying to piece together fragments of a story no one fully understood.
"A medical emergency involving billionaire philanthropist Marcus Thorne's wife..."
"Sources claim an altercation occurred inside a private hospital suite..."
"No official statement has been released..."
Inside the hospital, however, the truth was moving much faster than the rumors.
Khloe opened her eyes to the rhythmic beeping of a heart monitor.
The room was dim, illuminated only by soft bedside lights.
For a moment, she couldn't remember where she was.
Then the pain returned.
Sharp.
Heavy.
She instinctively placed a trembling hand over her stomach.
"Easy."
Marcus immediately leaned forward from the chair beside her bed.
"You scared me."
His voice was exhausted.
His tie had disappeared.
The sleeves of his white dress shirt were rolled to his elbows, stained with faint traces of dried blood from helping lift her off the marble floor.
Khloe searched his face.
"The baby?"
Marcus covered her hand with his own.
"Our little fighter is still with us."
Tears escaped before she could stop them.
Relief washed over her, followed almost instantly by another emotion.
Fear.
"What if she tries again?"
Marcus's jaw tightened.
"She won't."
There was something different in his voice.
No hesitation.
No uncertainty.
Only absolute conviction.
"Not ever again."
Outside the room, Richard Hale watched through the glass.
A nurse quietly approached him.
"Sir..."
He turned.
"The police detectives are here."
Richard nodded once.
"Bring them to Conference Room Three."
Within minutes, two senior detectives from the Major Crimes Division entered the secured conference room.
Detective Laura Bennett had spent twenty-three years investigating violent assaults.
Her partner, Detective Samuel Ortiz, rarely showed emotion.
Tonight, both looked unusually serious.
Richard placed a tablet on the table.
"I believe this belongs in your custody."
Laura pressed play.
Neither detective spoke during the seven-minute recording.
When it ended, Samuel slowly leaned back.
"She kicked a pregnant woman."
Richard answered calmly.
"Twice."
Laura looked up.
"Any editing?"
"No."
"Original file?"
Richard slid an encrypted drive across the table.
"Three verified copies."
Laura exchanged a glance with her partner.
"This is attempted homicide."
Richard's expression remained unreadable.
"My niece almost lost her child."
Silence settled over the room.
Then Laura asked the question everyone else had avoided.
"Who exactly is Isabella Rossi?"
Richard gave a faint smile.
"A woman who has spent fifteen years convincing powerful people she belongs among them."
He paused.
"She doesn't."
Across town...
Inside the penthouse of the Rossi Foundation...
Isabella poured herself another glass of champagne.
Her hands were steadier now.
Daniel Cross sat across from her, reviewing headlines on his laptop.
"So far, nobody has released details."
She smiled.
"They won't."
Daniel looked unconvinced.
"You seem very confident."
"I know how these people operate."
She walked toward the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city skyline.
"They'll protect the family's reputation."
Daniel closed the laptop.
"Marcus isn't famous for protecting people."
She laughed softly.
"No."
"He's famous for protecting business."
She took another sip.
"He won't destroy everything over one emotional incident."
Daniel hesitated.
"Unless..."
She looked at him.
"Unless what?"
"Unless someone has proof."
The room became very quiet.
Isabella's smile faded almost imperceptibly.
"There isn't any."
Daniel didn't answer.
He had defended wealthy clients for nearly thirty years.
The guilty ones always said the same thing.
"Nobody saw."
"Nobody can prove it."
"It's my word against theirs."
He hoped she was right.
For both their sakes.
At two o'clock in the morning...
Marcus finally stepped into the hospital corridor.
His phone had not stopped vibrating for hours.
Board members.
Investors.
Politicians.
Journalists.
Friends.
He ignored every call.
Then one name appeared on the screen.
Unknown Number.
Normally he would have declined.
Instead, he answered.
"This is Marcus."
A calm male voice responded.
"You don't know me."
Marcus frowned.
"But I know Isabella Rossi."
His heartbeat slowed.
"Who is this?"
"I'm someone who spent eight years collecting evidence against her."
Marcus stopped walking.
"What evidence?"
"A lot more than tonight."
Marcus remained silent.
The stranger continued.
"Financial fraud."
"Blackmail."
"Bribery."
"Witness intimidation."
Marcus's grip tightened around the phone.
"How did you get this number?"
Richard appeared at the end of the hallway just as Marcus spoke.
The mysterious caller answered quietly.
"Because your wife isn't Isabella's first victim."
Then—
The line went dead.
Marcus stared at the screen.
Richard reached him.
"What happened?"
Marcus looked up slowly.
"I think tonight was only the beginning."
The next morning...
Police officers arrived at Isabella Rossi's penthouse with an official request for questioning.
She greeted them wearing an immaculate cream-colored suit.
Confident.
Poised.
Smiling.
"I've been expecting you."
Detective Bennett handed her the notice.
"This isn't an arrest."
"Yet."
Isabella nodded politely.
"I'll cooperate fully."
She turned toward Daniel.
"See?"
"I told you."
"This is routine."
Before Daniel could respond, another elevator opened.
Three federal financial investigators stepped into the lobby.
Behind them came two agents from the State Attorney General's Office.
Everyone stopped walking.
Detective Bennett looked genuinely surprised.
The lead investigator approached Isabella.
"Ms. Rossi?"
"Yes?"
"We have a warrant authorizing the seizure of all electronic devices belonging to the Rossi Foundation."
Isabella blinked.
"What?"
Daniel stood.
"On what grounds?"
The investigator handed him another document.
"Suspicion of financial crimes unrelated to yesterday's assault."
Daniel quickly scanned the paperwork.
His face lost all color.
"This..."
He whispered.
"...who filed this?"
The investigator looked directly at Isabella.
"A protected witness."
For the first time in years...
Fear flickered across Isabella Rossi's face.
Someone had talked.
Someone she thought had disappeared forever.
Back at Hale Medical Center...
Khloe rested peacefully, unaware of the storm gathering beyond her hospital room.
Marcus sat beside her, holding her hand.
Richard entered carrying a thick brown file.
He placed it silently on the bedside table.
Marcus looked at the label.
ROSSI.
Confidential.
Compiled over nine years.
Hundreds of pages.
Richard met his nephew-in-law's eyes.
"I was hoping I'd never have to open this."
Marcus slowly opened the first page.
Inside was a photograph.
A much younger Isabella.
Standing beside an elderly billionaire.
The date beneath the picture was twelve years old.
Across the bottom, one sentence had been handwritten in blue ink.
Victim Number One.
Marcus looked up.
"How many are there?"
Richard answered without emotion.
"I stopped counting after seventeen."
Marcus closed the file.
If even half of it was true...
The woman who had attacked his wife wasn't simply jealous.
She had built her entire life on destroying other people's.

And now...
The walls she had spent years constructing were beginning to collapse.
