Chapter 13 – The Last Invitation

The message arrived on every phone simultaneously.
Marcus.
Khloe.
Richard.
Laura Bennett.
Even the FBI agents guarding the safe house.
A single address.
Pier 17.
A single time.
8:00 P.M.
And one warning.
Come alone... or history repeats itself.
For several seconds, no one spoke.
Laura broke the silence first.
"It's a trap."
Marcus slipped the phone into his pocket.
"I know."
"We're not letting you go."
"You can't stop me."
Richard stepped forward.
"Jonathan wants you angry."
"He wants you thinking like a husband instead of a businessman."
Marcus met his eyes.
"My wife was nearly murdered."
"My unborn child has been threatened."
"I stopped thinking like a businessman a long time ago."
Three hours later...
The FBI's tactical team transformed a conference room into a command center.
Satellite imagery covered one wall.
Blueprints of Pier 17 covered another.
Laura pointed to the map.
"Four sniper positions."
"Twelve tactical teams."
"Drones overhead."
Marcus interrupted.
"He said alone."
Laura didn't hesitate.
"And you'll appear to be."
She looked him straight in the eye.
"But you're not walking into this without us."
Meanwhile...
Inside the detention center...
A federal marshal unlocked Isabella's cell.
"Pack your things."
She frowned.
"I'm being transferred?"
"No."
The marshal's expression was unusually serious.
"You're being released into federal protective custody."
Isabella stared at him.
"What?"
"The charges remain."
"But someone just attempted to order your murder."
Her face went pale.
"Who?"
The marshal answered quietly.
"We believe Jonathan Mercer."
An hour later...
Isabella was escorted into a secure government vehicle.
As the convoy left the detention center...
A black motorcycle appeared two blocks behind.
Then another.
Then a third.
Laura watched the surveillance feed.
"They're following."
She spoke into her radio.
"Intercept."
Within seconds, unmarked police vehicles boxed the motorcycles in.
The riders abandoned their bikes and fled into nearby alleys.
One was caught.
The other two escaped.
Agents searched the captured rider.
Inside his jacket...
They found Isabella's photograph.
Across it, written in red ink:
No loose ends.
At the safe house...
Khloe quietly packed a small overnight bag.
Marcus entered.
"You should be resting."
She smiled sadly.
"I've spent days hiding."
She zipped the bag.
"I'm tired of hiding."
Marcus sat beside her.
"I'm going tonight."
"I know."
She placed his hand against her stomach.
The baby kicked almost immediately.
"Our child deserves the truth."
Marcus felt tears forming.
"I don't know how this ends."
Khloe looked into his eyes.
"Then promise me one thing."
"Anything."
"No more secrets."
He nodded.
"I promise."
7:58 P.M.
Pier 17.
Fog rolled across the Hudson River.
The abandoned shipping terminal stood empty.
Marcus walked slowly toward the center of the pier.
No bodyguards.
No visible police.
Exactly as instructed.
A lone figure stepped from the shadows.
Jonathan Mercer.
Older than the photographs.
But unmistakable.
He smiled.
"I was beginning to think you'd disappoint me."
Marcus stopped twenty feet away.
"You destroyed innocent people."
Jonathan tilted his head.
"Innocent?"
He laughed softly.
"There are no innocent people."
"Only winners..."
"...and those who pretend morality matters."
Marcus's voice remained calm.
"My father believed you were his friend."
Jonathan's smile faded.
"Your father believed everyone was his friend."
"That made him predictable."
High above...
FBI snipers watched through rifle scopes.
Laura whispered into her radio.
"Hold positions."
"No one fires unless I give the order."
Back on the pier...
Marcus stared at Jonathan.
"Why my family?"
Jonathan looked out over the river.
"Your father had something I wanted."
"What?"
Jonathan turned slowly.
"Loyalty."
Marcus frowned.
"That doesn't make sense."
Jonathan smiled.
"It never made sense to William either."
He reached into his coat.
Marcus stiffened.
Jonathan slowly removed...
Not a weapon.
An old photograph.
Three young men smiling together.
William.
Richard.
Jonathan.
He handed it to Marcus.
"We built dreams together."
His voice softened for the first time.
"But dreams become expensive."
Marcus looked up.
"So you killed him?"
Jonathan didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he looked toward the dark water.
"No."
"I gave him a choice."
Marcus's pulse quickened.
"What choice?"
Jonathan whispered,
"Become like me..."
"...or lose everything."
Suddenly—
A woman's voice echoed across the pier.
"He refused."
Everyone turned.
Catherine Vale stepped out from the fog.
She was alone.
Jonathan's expression hardened.
"I told you to stay away."
Catherine ignored him.
She looked at Marcus.
"Your father chose his family."
She turned back toward Jonathan.
"And that's why you murdered him."
Silence.
Marcus felt the world stop.
Jonathan slowly laughed.
"So..."
"You finally decided to tell the truth."
Catherine's eyes filled with tears.
"I should have done it twenty years ago."
Jonathan shrugged.
"It's too late now."
He reached into his pocket.
Laura's voice exploded through the radio.
"He's reaching!"
Snipers prepared to fire.
Jonathan raised...
A small remote control.
Marcus's heart stopped.
"What is that?"
Jonathan smiled one last time.
"Insurance."
Red lights suddenly began flashing beneath the old pier.
Laura looked at the engineering map.
Her face lost all color.
"Oh my God..."
Marcus shouted,
"What?"
Laura screamed into the radio.
"Everyone evacuate!"
"The entire pier is wired with explosives!"
Jonathan calmly looked at Marcus.
"I told your father..."
"...history always repeats itself."
He pressed the button.
Nothing happened.
Jonathan frowned.
He pressed it again.
Still nothing.
Then another voice came through the darkness.
"I disconnected them."
Everyone turned.
Isabella Rossi emerged from behind an FBI tactical vehicle.
She held a pair of wire cutters in one hand.
"I spent twenty years destroying innocent lives."
Tears streamed down her face.
"I'm done helping monsters."
Jonathan stared at her.
For the first time...
He looked genuinely shocked.
"You."
Isabella nodded.
"Me."
Before Jonathan could react—
FBI agents stormed the pier from every direction.
"Federal agents!"
"Drop the remote!"
Jonathan looked around.
Smiled.
Then quietly said,
"You still don't understand."
Marcus frowned.
"What?"
Jonathan looked directly into him.
"This was never my endgame."
A deafening gunshot echoed through the night.
Everyone froze.
Jonathan looked down.
Blood spread across his white shirt.
He hadn't been shot by the FBI.
The bullet had come...
From somewhere behind them.
Jonathan slowly collapsed onto the wooden pier.
His final words barely rose above a whisper.
"He's..."
"...already inside."
His eyes closed.
He never spoke again.
Laura spun toward the nearby warehouses.
"Find the shooter!"
Tactical teams disappeared into the darkness.
No one was found.
Only a single shell casing remained on the rooftop.
Marcus stood over Jonathan's body.
The man responsible for decades of destruction was dead.
The nightmare should have been over.
Instead...
It had become even more terrifying.
Because Jonathan Mercer's last words meant only one thing.
May you like
The real conspiracy...
had not died with him.
