CHAPTER 7 The Son Who Came Back

No one breathed.
Richard Bennett stood frozen, staring at the man emerging from the shadows of Vault Seven.
"My son..." he whispered again.
The stranger stepped fully into the emergency light.
He looked to be in his early thirties.
Dark hair.
Sharp blue eyes.
A tailored charcoal suit that looked untouched by the chaos outside.
The silver pendant around his neck swayed gently as he walked.
Elena couldn't move.
"I... had a brother?"
The man looked at her for several long seconds.
Then he smiled.
"Hello, Elena."
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
She searched his face, looking for memories that simply weren't there.
"I don't remember you."
"You were five," he replied softly. "You weren't supposed to."
Lily looked up at Elena.
"Mom... is he really my uncle?"
No one answered.
Richard slowly stepped forward.
"Michael..."
The man raised a hand.
"Don't."
Richard stopped.
"I've waited twenty-two years to hear your explanation."
Michael's smile disappeared.
"And now..."
"I don't think I want it."
Daniel quietly positioned himself between Elena and Michael.
He noticed something immediately.
Michael wasn't armed.
At least not visibly.
But he carried himself like someone who didn't need a weapon.
Frank stared at him in disbelief.
"I watched them take you..."
Michael turned toward him.
"You remember."
"I thought you were dead."
"So did everyone else."
Richard's voice trembled.
"The night of the fire..."
Michael finished the sentence.
"...you chose Elena."
Silence.
Every word echoed inside the vault.
Elena looked at her father.
"What is he talking about?"
Richard closed his eyes.
"There was a fire at our lake house."
"I know that."
"You don't know everything."
Twenty-two years earlier...
Richard had returned home to find the house engulfed in flames.
Smoke poured from every window.
He heard two children screaming.
Elena upstairs.
Michael downstairs.
The staircase collapsed before he could reach both.
He made a choice.
He rescued Elena.
When firefighters finally reached the lower level...
Michael was gone.
Everyone assumed he had died in the fire.
Richard never found a body.
Only ashes.
"I searched for you," Richard whispered.
"For years."
Michael's expression remained cold.
"But eventually..."
"...you stopped."
Richard lowered his head.
"I never stopped."
Elena's eyes filled with tears.
"You thought he was dead?"
Richard nodded.
"I buried an empty coffin."
Michael laughed quietly.
"You buried your guilt."
Before anyone could respond, a loud explosion shook the vault.
The ceiling rained dust.
Frank looked toward the entrance.
"They found us."
Daniel rushed to the security monitor inside the vault.
Several camera feeds flickered to life.
Black SUVs surrounded the estate.
Dozens of armed men in tactical gear poured onto the grounds.
None wore uniforms.
None displayed insignias.
Professional.
Organized.
Merciless.
Daniel frowned.
"They're not Victor's people."
Michael glanced at the screen.
"No."
"They're mine."
Everyone turned toward him.
Elena's heart sank.
"What?"
Michael sighed.
"I didn't bring them to hurt you."
Richard looked unconvinced.
"Then why are they here?"
"To stop the people following me."
Daniel frowned.
"Who's following you?"
Michael looked directly at him.
"The people who created Project Phoenix."
The room fell silent.
Richard's face hardened.
"They're still operating?"
"They never stopped."
Frank looked confused.
"I thought Phoenix ended decades ago."
Michael smiled bitterly.
"It evolved."
Victor watched everything through a hidden surveillance feed.
He leaned back slowly.
"So..."
"Michael Bennett."
"You finally came home."
He opened the red folder labeled PROJECT PHOENIX.
Inside was a photograph.
A much younger Michael.
No older than ten.
Standing beside three adults in lab coats.
On the back someone had written:
SUBJECT ZERO
Victor whispered,
"So Richard never knew."
Back inside Vault Seven...
Elena shook her head.
"Someone tell me what's happening."
Richard looked at Michael.
"You should."
Michael nodded.
"Project Phoenix wasn't a business."
"It wasn't a government agency."
"It wasn't even a family operation."
"It was an experiment."
Lily frowned.
"What kind of experiment?"
Michael looked at the little girl with surprising kindness.
"The kind that should never have existed."
Suddenly—
Every light inside the vault turned bright white.
A calm computerized voice echoed overhead.
Biometric scan complete.
Welcome, Subject Zero.
Everyone froze.
Michael stared upward.
"I was afraid of that."
Another message followed.
Secondary authorization accepted.
Vault Protocol Omega activated.
Heavy steel doors slammed shut throughout the underground tunnels.
Daniel rushed toward the exit.
The massive vault door had already sealed.
"It locked!"
Frank searched the control panel.
"No manual override."
Richard's expression darkened.
"The vault just became a prison."
At that exact moment...
Victor smiled inside the control room.
"They're trapped."
He pressed one final key.
A digital timer appeared on every monitor inside Vault Seven.
30:00
The countdown had begun.
Elena looked at the screen.
"What is that?"
Michael answered quietly.
"If it reaches zero..."
"...this entire underground complex will self-destruct."
Lily grabbed Elena's hand.
"Mom..."
"Are we going to die?"
Before Elena could answer—
Another screen flickered on.
The masked figure from the earlier broadcast appeared once again.
This time, the voice was no longer distorted.
"Welcome back, Michael."
Michael's confident expression vanished.
He whispered,
"No..."
The figure slowly removed the black mask.
Everyone inside the vault stared in disbelief.
Because the face on the screen...
Was identical to Michael's.
Same eyes.
Same scar above the left eyebrow.
Same voice.
The man on the screen smiled.
"You've been pretending to be the original for a long time."
He leaned closer to the camera.
May you like
"But now..."
"It's my turn."
