CHAPTER 4 The Man Everyone Buried

Silence swallowed the room.

Even the alarms seemed distant.

Elena stared at the man standing in the shattered doorway.

His hair had turned silver.

Deep lines marked his face.

His shoulders were broader than she remembered, but his eyes…

They were exactly the same.

Warm.

Steady.

Protective.

Her lips trembled.

"Dad...?"

The man smiled sadly.

"I've missed hearing you call me that."

Tears blurred Elena's vision.

For twenty-two years she had mourned him.

Visited an empty grave.

Celebrated birthdays without him.

Raised Lily believing her grandfather had died a hero.

Now he stood only thirty feet away.

Alive.

Victor slowly backed away.

"No..."

Richard stepped forward.

"You've been running for a long time."

Victor forced himself to smile.

"You should have stayed dead."

"I tried."

Richard glanced toward Elena in the pool.

"But fathers don't stay hidden forever."

Daniel looked between the two men.

"You really are Richard Bennett."

Richard nodded.

"I am."

Daniel's voice cracked.

"My father said you stole everything from him."

Richard laughed once.

"A lie he repeated so often he started believing it himself."

Victor snapped.

"Don't listen to him!"

Richard's eyes never left Victor.

"Then tell them the truth."

Victor remained silent.

Lily suddenly broke free again.

She ran toward Richard.

The older man knelt instinctively.

"You know who I am?"

Lily nodded.

"Mom showed me your pictures."

Richard smiled through tears.

"You've grown so much."

"You really are my grandpa?"

"I am."

She hugged him tightly.

Richard closed his eyes.

For one brief moment...

The years disappeared.

Then—

A gunshot echoed through the room.

BANG!

The bullet struck the marble floor inches from Richard's feet.

Everyone turned.

Victor still held the pistol.

"You've had your reunion."

He raised the weapon again.

"But this family ends tonight."

Before he could fire—

Daniel tackled him.

The gun slid across the wet floor.

Lily screamed.

Richard rushed toward Elena instead of chasing the weapon.

"Stay down!" Daniel shouted.

Richard reached the edge of the pool.

"Elena!"

She reached for him.

"Dad!"

He grabbed her free hand.

His grip was strong.

"I've got you."

"I'm still chained."

Richard looked beneath the water.

His expression changed immediately.

"This anchor..."

He frowned.

"I know this system."

"You do?"

"I designed it."

Everyone froze.

Even Victor stopped struggling for a second.

Richard sighed.

"When this estate belonged to your grandfather, I helped install the emergency maintenance tunnels."

Daniel looked up.

"Tunnels?"

Richard nodded.

"The chain isn't the real trap."

"What do you mean?"

"The entire floor beneath the pool is hollow."

Victor suddenly shouted,

"Don't tell them!"

Richard ignored him.

"There is another release underneath."

Daniel understood instantly.

"The maintenance tunnel."

Richard nodded.

"Exactly."

Victor shoved Daniel away.

He sprinted toward the maintenance room.

Richard followed.

The chase exploded through the lower level of the mansion.

Emergency lights flashed red.

Security doors slammed shut automatically.

Victor barely slipped through one before it closed.

Richard reached it seconds later.

Locked.

Victor laughed from the other side.

"You always were one step behind."

Richard calmly pulled a small metal card from his pocket.

He swiped it across the emergency panel.

CLICK.

The door opened.

Victor's smile vanished.

"You kept the master key."

"I built this house."

Meanwhile...

Daniel dove back into the water.

"I'll go underneath."

Elena shook her head.

"The baby's..."

"I know."

"I'm not leaving you."

He disappeared beneath the surface.

Holding his breath, he squeezed through the narrow maintenance hatch.

The tunnel below was barely large enough to crawl.

Rusted pipes lined both sides.

Old emergency lights flickered weakly.

He followed the chain.

Twenty feet.

Thirty.

Then...

He found the second locking mechanism.

A massive steel gearbox.

Covered in rust.

Back upstairs...

Lily remembered Victor's phone.

She ran to Richard.

"Grandpa!"

She held it up.

"I found this."

Richard took the phone.

He opened the messages.

His face darkened.

"What is it?" Elena asked.

Richard slowly turned the screen toward Daniel.

One message stood out.

Witness must be eliminated after transfer is complete.

Below it...

A list of names.

Elena.

Daniel.

Lily.

Marcus Reed.

Richard Bennett.

Every one of them had been marked.

Victor hadn't planned to kill only Elena.

He planned to erase everyone.

Inside the tunnel...

Daniel searched the gearbox.

There had to be a release.

Instead...

He found something unexpected.

A small waterproof envelope taped behind one of the pipes.

His name was written across it.

DANIEL

His hands trembled.

Someone had hidden this years ago.

He opened it.

Inside was a handwritten note.

If you're reading this, Victor has already betrayed you.

Do not trust the Ashford accounts.

Everything you need is inside Vault Seven.

Bring Elena.

Bring the child.

And never let Victor reach the lighthouse.

—R.B.

Daniel stared at the initials.

Richard Bennett.

He had planned for this.

Years before.

Suddenly—

The tunnel shook violently.

A loud explosion echoed somewhere above.

Dust rained from the ceiling.

Daniel looked toward the exit.

The gearbox began vibrating.

Then a computerized voice echoed through hidden speakers.

Emergency flooding system activated.

Cold water rushed into the tunnel from both directions.

Daniel's eyes widened.

"No..."

Someone had activated the backup defense system.

Within seconds...

The tunnel began filling with water.

Above the pool, Elena saw bubbles erupt from beneath her feet.

"Daniel!"

No answer.

Only rising bubbles.

Richard looked toward the tunnel entrance.

His expression hardened.

"Victor..."

"You planned this too."

Deep inside the flooding tunnel, Daniel clutched the envelope in one hand and reached desperately for the rusted release lever with the other.

The water rose to his chest...

Then to his neck.

The lever finally moved—

Just a fraction.

Behind him, something heavy shifted in the darkness.

It wasn't the water.

May you like

Someone else...

Was inside the tunnel with him.
