CHAPTER 19 Grace Bennett

The Archive stood perfectly still.

Even the moving shelves had stopped.

The only sound was the voice echoing gently through the speakers.

"Hello, Dad."

Richard felt his heart pounding against his ribs.

"My name is Grace Bennett."

Claire's face had gone completely white.

She whispered one word.

"No..."

Elena turned toward her mother.

"You know that name."

Claire slowly nodded.

Richard stared at her.

"Claire..."

She closed her eyes.

"I prayed this recording had been destroyed."

The recording continued.

"If you're listening..."

"...it means the Archive has restored your memories."

Richard shook his head.

"I don't understand."

Claire looked at him with tears in her eyes.

"You will."

The image of a young girl appeared above the Memory Engine.

She couldn't have been older than ten.

Dark hair.

Bright blue eyes.

A warm smile.

Lily frowned.

"She looks like Mommy."

Elena slowly nodded.

She did.

The resemblance was undeniable.

Grace smiled into the camera.

"If you're wondering who I am..."

"I'm your daughter."

Silence.

Richard stared at the projection.

"No."

Grace looked directly into the camera.

"I was born two years before Michael."

Daniel frowned.

"That can't be."

Rachel quietly whispered,

"It can."

Richard turned toward Rachel.

"You knew?"

Rachel nodded.

"I promised Claire..."

"...I would never tell anyone."

Richard staggered backward.

"I had another child."

Claire's tears finally fell.

"She died before her first birthday."

Grace's recording continued.

"That's what everyone believes."

Richard looked at Claire.

"What does she mean?"

Claire lowered her head.

"We never buried Grace."

Michael slowly stepped into the Memory Engine chamber, Adam close behind him.

Both men had heard the recording.

Adam looked at the hologram of the little girl.

"I remember her."

Everyone turned toward him.

"You do?"

Adam nodded.

"She used to sing."

Claire covered her mouth.

"Oh, my God..."

Richard walked toward Adam.

"You knew Grace?"

Adam nodded again.

"Barely."

"I remember someone taking her away."

He closed his eyes.

"I thought it was a dream."

The projection suddenly changed.

The image skipped forward several years.

Grace was older now.

Perhaps sixteen.

She smiled sadly.

"If you're seeing this version..."

"...then I never came home."

Elena whispered,

"She made more than one recording."

Rachel nodded.

"The Archive updated itself."

Grace continued.

"Mom..."

"If you're watching..."

"Don't blame yourself anymore."

Claire broke down completely.

Richard wrapped his arms around her.

For twenty-two years, he had believed Claire had abandoned him.

Now he realized...

She had been carrying a grief she could never share.

Suddenly—

The recording glitched.

A new face appeared.

Margaret.

Much younger.

Standing beside Grace.

Grace wasn't frightened.

She wasn't restrained.

She was smiling.

Richard stared in disbelief.

"No..."

Margaret spoke directly to the camera.

"Today, Grace begins her training."

Claire screamed.

"No!"

She lunged toward the projector as if she could stop the recording.

Too late.

The footage continued.

Grace looked no older than seventeen.

She wore the same silver bracelet Claire had been forced to wear.

A tracking bracelet.

Margaret placed a hand on Grace's shoulder.

"You will lead Phoenix one day."

Grace quietly replied,

"No."

Margaret smiled.

"You'll change your mind."

The recording ended.

The room fell silent.

Daniel looked toward Claire.

"So Grace..."

Claire nodded.

"...never died."

Before anyone could speak—

Every monitor inside the Archive switched on.

A live security feed appeared.

A woman was walking through the central corridor.

Long dark coat.

Hair tied back.

Confident.

Calm.

She stopped beneath one of the cameras.

Then slowly looked up.

Straight into the lens.

Elena stopped breathing.

It was Grace.

Not a recording.

Not a memory.

Alive.

Grace smiled faintly.

"Hello, everyone."

Richard stepped toward the monitor.

"Grace..."

She nodded.

"It's really me."

Claire pressed a trembling hand against the screen.

"My baby..."

Grace's eyes softened.

"I've missed you."

Michael looked around.

"Where are you?"

Grace smiled.

"Closer than you think."

Adam's expression suddenly changed.

"No..."

Everyone looked at him.

"What?"

Adam slowly turned toward the massive Archive doors.

"She's here."

The heavy doors began to unlock.

One by one.

The ancient locking mechanisms disengaged.

A deep rumble echoed through the building.

Then...

The doors slowly opened.

Grace stepped inside.

For the first time in twenty-eight years...

The Bennett family stood together.

Richard.

Claire.

Elena.

Michael.

Grace.

Even Adam.

No one spoke.

Grace quietly walked toward her parents.

Richard's hands trembled.

He reached out.

Grace took his hand.

Then she looked around the Archive.

Her smile faded.

"We don't have much time."

Elena frowned.

"Why?"

Grace looked directly at Margaret's security camera.

Then calmly said,

"Because..."

"...I'm the one who activated the Archive's self-destruct."

Silence.

Complete silence.

Even Margaret, watching from her command center, slowly stood from her chair.

May you like

For the first time in decades...

The Director looked afraid.
