CHAPTER 20 The Final Countdown

A deafening alarm erupted throughout the Phoenix Archive.

Red emergency lights flooded every corridor.

A computerized voice echoed through the vast underground complex.

WARNING.

SELF-DESTRUCT SEQUENCE IRREVERSIBLE.

TIME REMAINING: 59:59

The countdown had dropped from two hours...

To one.

Everyone stared at Grace.

Richard's voice barely escaped his lips.

"You activated it?"

Grace nodded.

"I did."

Claire grabbed her daughter's shoulders.

"Why?"

Grace looked into her mother's eyes.

"Because Phoenix can never be allowed to exist again."

Margaret slammed both hands onto the control console in her command center.

"Find her!"

Dozens of operators sprang into action.

One technician looked up nervously.

"Director..."

"We've lost control of the Archive."

Margaret turned sharply.

"What?"

"The core system no longer accepts your authorization."

Margaret's face hardened.

"Who has control?"

The technician swallowed.

"It recognizes..."

"...Grace Bennett as the new Administrator."

Silence filled the room.

Margaret whispered in disbelief.

"Impossible."

Back inside the Archive...

Michael looked at Grace.

"You knew about this place all along."

Grace nodded.

"I grew up here."

Adam stepped forward.

"So did I."

Grace looked at him sadly.

"I know."

Adam frowned.

"You remember me?"

She smiled faintly.

"I remember everyone."

Daniel studied the digital countdown.

"Can it be stopped?"

Grace shook her head.

"No."

"It was designed that way."

Richard clenched his fists.

"Then why are we still here?"

Grace walked toward the center of the Archive.

Toward an enormous circular vault sealed behind reinforced steel.

"The records."

"If they're destroyed..."

"...every victim disappears forever."

Rachel stepped beside her.

"So we save the evidence."

Grace nodded.

"Exactly."

Gabriel finally spoke.

"How?"

Grace reached into her coat and removed a silver access card.

"The Archive has a final protocol."

"It automatically copies every file."

Michael's eyes widened.

"Where?"

Grace answered quietly.

"To someone the Director never suspected."

Suddenly...

Every screen in the Archive lit up.

One name appeared across all of them.

THOMAS HALE

Richard frowned.

"Thomas?"

Grace smiled.

"The Keeper didn't spend thirty years guarding books."

"He guarded the backup."

Frank gasped.

"The lantern..."

Grace nodded.

"It wasn't just a lantern."

"It contained the master archive."

Michael remembered the lantern shattering after Thomas was shot.

His face went pale.

"It broke."

Grace smiled.

"No."

"It opened."

Meanwhile...

Margaret hurried through a private underground tunnel beneath the command center.

Two armed guards followed close behind.

She wasn't running toward the Archive.

She was running away from it.

One guard looked confused.

"Director?"

Margaret didn't answer.

She reached a reinforced steel vault.

A biometric scanner lit up.

She placed her hand against it.

ACCESS DENIED.

Margaret frowned.

Again.

ACCESS DENIED.

The system displayed a new message.

ADMINISTRATOR REVOKED.

For the first time...

Margaret realized she no longer owned Phoenix.

Inside the Archive...

Grace inserted the silver card into the central vault.

Ancient gears rumbled beneath the floor.

The massive vault slowly opened.

Everyone stared.

There was no gold.

No cash.

No weapons.

Only shelves filled with thousands of small black memory drives.

Each labeled with a name.

A victim.

A witness.

A missing child.

A stolen identity.

An entire lifetime preserved.

Claire whispered,

"My God..."

Lily looked up at Elena.

"Mom..."

"Are these everyone's stories?"

Elena knelt beside her daughter.

"Yes."

"And we're going to make sure no one forgets them."

Suddenly—

A loud explosion shook the Archive.

Dust poured from the ceiling.

Daniel looked toward the entrance.

"They're coming."

Security cameras showed Margaret's remaining operatives forcing their way inside.

Grace remained calm.

"They're too late."

Michael and Adam moved together for the first time.

Without speaking.

Without hesitation.

The two brothers began removing drive after drive from the shelves.

Richard, Claire, Rachel, Frank, Gabriel, Daniel, and even Lily joined them.

An assembly line formed.

One family.

One purpose.

Saving the truth.

The countdown continued.

42:13

42:12

42:11

Another explosion.

Closer.

The massive entrance doors began to bend inward.

Margaret's forces wouldn't be stopped much longer.

Grace looked toward Richard.

"Dad..."

He turned.

She handed him one final drive.

Unlike the others...

It had no label.

Only a small engraving.

PROJECT ORIGIN

Richard frowned.

"What is this?"

Grace's expression became serious.

"The first file."

"The reason Phoenix was created."

Gabriel's face lost all color.

"No..."

Richard looked at him.

"You've seen this before."

Gabriel nodded slowly.

"I helped write it."

Silence.

Complete silence.

Daniel looked from Gabriel to the drive.

"What does it contain?"

Gabriel swallowed.

"The truth."

"What truth?"

Gabriel closed his eyes.

"When you open that file..."

"...you'll discover that Phoenix was never the beginning."

He looked toward the collapsing ceiling.

"It was only the second organization."

Everyone froze.

Richard stared at the unmarked drive in his hand.

"If Phoenix wasn't first..."

"...then what was?"

Before Gabriel could answer—

The lights throughout the Archive suddenly went black.

A cold, unfamiliar voice echoed through the darkness.

Not Margaret.

Not the Archive.

Not anyone they recognized.

"Thank you for finding the Origin File."

A pause.

Then the voice continued.

"We've been waiting for the Bennett family."

The countdown abruptly disappeared.

Replaced by a new message glowing across every screen.
