CHAPTER 5 The Shadow in the Tunnel

The sound came again.

Clang.

Metal scraping against metal.

Daniel froze.

The tunnel was barely four feet high. Cold water surged around his waist, rising faster with every passing second.

He wasn't alone.

The emergency lights flickered.

For a split second, he saw the silhouette of someone standing at the far end of the tunnel.

Watching him.

Then the light went out again.

"Who's there?" Daniel shouted.

No answer.

Only the rushing water.

Above the pool, Elena felt the chain tighten again.

The maintenance hatch beneath her feet trembled violently as water flooded the tunnel below.

Richard leaned over the edge.

"Daniel!"

His voice echoed through the narrow opening.

Nothing.

Lily clutched Richard's arm.

"Is Daddy okay?"

Richard forced a reassuring smile.

"He knows what he's’s doing."

But inside...

He wasn't sure anymore.

Victor slipped into the mansion's underground control room.

The steel door sealed behind him.

Unlike the chaos upstairs, everything here was silent.

Monitors covered the walls.

Blueprints of the entire estate glowed across several screens.

Victor calmly wiped the blood from his lip.

"They're faster than I expected."

He opened a secure cabinet.

Inside sat a black metal briefcase.

A fingerprint scanner flashed green.

The lock clicked open.

Stacks of legal documents.

Hard drives.

Passports.

Cash.

And one thin red folder labeled:

PROJECT PHOENIX

Victor smiled.

"So it finally comes to this."

Back in the tunnel...

Daniel reached the rusted release lever.

He pulled with everything he had.

Nothing.

The water climbed to his chest.

Then—

A flashlight beam suddenly illuminated the tunnel.

Daniel spun around.

The mysterious figure slowly stepped forward.

An elderly man in dirty work clothes.

Gray beard.

Oil-stained cap.

He looked as though he had lived underground for years.

"You pulled the wrong lever," the old man said calmly.

Daniel stared.

"Who are you?"

The man ignored the question.

"If you force that one..."

"...the entire pool collapses."

Daniel blinked.

"What?"

"The emergency release is hidden behind the second panel."

He pointed toward the wall.

Daniel hesitated.

"How do you know?"

The old man smiled.

"Because I built it."

Upstairs...

Richard suddenly stopped.

His eyes widened.

"It can't be..."

He whispered a name.

"Frank."

Elena frowned.

"You know him?"

Richard nodded slowly.

"He was the estate's chief engineer."

"I thought Victor fired him."

"He did."

Richard's face darkened.

"I thought Victor killed him."

Frank knelt in the rising water.

He removed a rusted wrench from his belt.

"You don't have much time."

Together, he and Daniel pried open a steel maintenance panel.

Inside...

A bright yellow emergency release handle.

Frank nodded.

"Pull it."

Daniel grabbed the handle.

"Ready?"

Frank smiled.

"I've been waiting eighteen years."

Daniel pulled.

A thunderous metallic boom echoed through the estate.

Inside the pool...

The second cuff sprang open.

CLACK!

Elena's left wrist was free.

For the first time...

She wasn't chained.

Richard reached down.

"Take my hand!"

She kicked upward with all the strength she had left.

Richard and two security guards loyal to him pulled her from the water.

She collapsed onto the marble floor, coughing violently.

Lily threw herself into her mother's arms.

"Mommy!"

Elena hugged her tightly despite her exhaustion.

"I've got you..."

"I'm here."

Richard knelt beside them.

His eyes filled with relief.

"You're safe."

But before anyone could celebrate—

A deep rumbling shook the entire mansion.

Victor looked at one of the control monitors.

Pool escape successful.

His smile disappeared.

"So..."

"They actually survived."

He pressed another button.

A hidden compartment opened beneath the control console.

Inside rested a satellite phone.

Victor dialed a number from memory.

The call connected after one ring.

"It's me," Victor said.

"They're alive."

A calm voice answered.

"I expected that."

Victor frowned.

"You did?"

"They've served their purpose."

Victor's expression changed.

"What do you mean?"

"You've kept them busy."

Silence.

Then the voice continued.

"Now leave the estate."

Victor slowly realized something.

"You used me."

No answer.

The line disconnected.

Victor stared at the phone.

For the first time...

He understood.

He wasn't the mastermind.

He was only another piece on the board.

Meanwhile...

Frank led Daniel through another maintenance tunnel.

"We need to hurry."

Daniel followed.

"Where are we going?"

"To Vault Seven."

Daniel stopped.

"You know about it?"

Frank laughed quietly.

"I poured its foundation."

Richard's note suddenly made sense.

Everything pointed toward Vault Seven.

"What is it?" Daniel asked.

Frank's smile vanished.

"It's the only place Victor was never allowed to enter."

Back upstairs...

Richard wrapped a blanket around Elena.

She was exhausted, shivering, but alive.

"There's something you need to know," Richard said.

Elena looked at him.

"Everything."

Richard took a deep breath.

"Twenty-two years ago, I didn't disappear because I was afraid."

"Then why?"

"I disappeared because someone inside our own family sold us out."

Elena's eyes widened.

"Who?"

Before Richard could answer—

A loud crack echoed through the mansion.

Every television screen suddenly turned on.

Every monitor.

Every phone.

The same image appeared everywhere.

A person wearing a black mask sat in a dark room.

Their voice was electronically distorted.

"Good evening, Ashford family."

Everyone stared.

The masked figure continued.

"If you're watching this..."

"...Phase One is complete."

Victor watched from the control room, his face turning white.

"No..."

The masked figure slowly removed one black glove.

On the inside of the wrist...

Was the unmistakable Bennett family crest.

Richard whispered,

"Impossible..."

The figure leaned closer to the camera.

"You've spent twenty-two years looking for Richard Bennett."

A slow chuckle echoed through every speaker.

"You should have been looking for me."

The screen went black.

The mansion fell silent.

No one moved.

No one spoke.

Because everyone in the room had the exact same terrifying thought:

If Richard Bennett was standing beside them...

May you like

...then who was the person carrying the Bennett family crest?
