CHAPTER 6 Vault Seven

The silence after the broadcast was more terrifying than the alarms.

No one spoke.

No one moved.

Richard Bennett stared at the blank television screen as though he had seen a ghost.

Elena broke the silence.

"Dad..."

He didn't answer.

"Dad, who was that?"

Richard slowly lowered his head.

"I don't know."

Victor laughed bitterly through the security monitor in the underground control room.

"For the first time..."

"...Richard Bennett is telling the truth."

Daniel emerged from the maintenance tunnel, soaked from head to toe.

Frank climbed out behind him.

Lily ran into Daniel's arms.

"Daddy!"

Daniel hugged her tightly.

"I thought I'd lost you."

"You didn't."

She smiled through tears.

"You kept your promise."

Daniel looked at Elena.

For the first time in years...

They embraced without fear.

Richard watched quietly.

Then his expression hardened.

"We don't have much time."

Daniel nodded.

"The note."

He handed Richard the waterproof envelope.

Richard opened it.

His own handwriting stared back at him.

"I wrote this twenty years ago."

Elena frowned.

"You planned all this?"

"I hoped I'd never need it."

Frank interrupted.

"Vault Seven."

Richard looked at him.

"You remember where it is?"

Frank nodded.

"I never forgot."

Victor's eyes widened as he watched through hidden cameras.

"No..."

"They can't find it."

He immediately reached for another control panel.

His fingers flew across the keyboard.

A digital map of the estate appeared.

He selected one location.

VAULT SEVEN

Status:

SEALED

Victor smiled.

"Not for long."

He pressed a flashing red button.

Across the estate...

A silent countdown began.

The group hurried through the lower corridors.

Frank led the way.

"This tunnel hasn't been used in years."

Dust covered every surface.

Spider webs stretched across rusted pipes.

Lily held Elena's hand tightly.

"Are we safe now?"

Elena forced a smile.

"We're getting there."

Richard glanced behind them.

"No..."

"Not yet."

Several hundred yards away...

A convoy of black SUVs approached the estate.

No headlights.

No license plates.

No markings.

Inside the lead vehicle, a woman wearing an earpiece looked at a digital tablet.

"Target has entered Sector Seven."

A man's voice answered through her headset.

"Proceed."

"What about Victor?"

"He served his purpose."

She nodded once.

"Understood."

Back underground...

Frank stopped beside an old brick wall.

"There."

Daniel frowned.

"There's nothing here."

Frank smiled.

"There never was."

He reached into a crack between two bricks.

A hidden lever clicked.

The entire wall rumbled.

Slowly...

A steel vault door emerged from behind decades of concrete dust.

Across its surface were engraved two words.

VAULT SEVEN

Richard stepped forward.

He gently touched the metal.

"I never thought I'd see this again."

The vault required three keys.

Frank inserted a rusted brass key from around his neck.

Richard removed the silver key hidden inside the pocket watch.

The second lock opened.

Everyone looked at Daniel.

"I don't have one."

Richard smiled faintly.

"You do."

Daniel frowned.

"What?"

Richard pointed toward the envelope.

"Check inside."

Daniel searched the waterproof pouch again.

Hidden beneath the folded letter...

A tiny black key.

He stared at Richard.

"You trusted me?"

Richard answered quietly.

"I hoped one day I could."

Daniel inserted the final key.

The massive vault door slowly opened.

The room inside was nothing like anyone expected.

No stacks of gold.

No piles of cash.

Instead...

Rows upon rows of filing cabinets.

Servers.

Hard drives.

Photographs.

Boxes labeled with years.

Every secret Richard Bennett had collected over three decades.

Frank whispered,

"This is why they hunted him."

Elena walked toward one cabinet.

A folder immediately caught her attention.

It bore a single name.

VICTOR

She opened it.

Inside were photographs of Victor as a teenager.

Bank records.

Adoption papers.

Medical files.

Then...

One document stopped her cold.

Birth Certificate

Father:

Unknown.

Mother:

Unknown.

But beneath that...

Someone had written in red ink:

Subject relocated under Project Phoenix.

Elena looked at Richard.

"What is Project Phoenix?"

Richard's face lost all color.

"No..."

He snatched the file from her hands.

"That file should've been destroyed."

Daniel noticed another cabinet.

It contained only photographs.

Thousands of them.

Most showed politicians.

Business executives.

Judges.

Police commissioners.

Every one of them shaking hands with someone.

Victor.

Richard sighed.

"He wasn't just stealing companies."

"He was building influence."

Suddenly...

Frank stopped in front of an old wooden crate.

He looked confused.

"It shouldn't be open."

Richard turned.

"What?"

Frank pointed.

"The archive."

Its padlock lay broken on the floor.

Someone had already been inside.

Very recently.

Richard's breathing became uneven.

"Who?"

No one answered.

Behind the crate...

Lily wandered toward a dusty desk.

She picked up an old family photograph.

It showed Richard.

A young Elena.

Her mother.

And another little boy standing beside them.

Lily frowned.

"Mom?"

Elena looked over.

"Who's that?"

Elena took the picture.

Her heart skipped a beat.

"I've never seen him before."

Richard slowly approached.

The color drained from his face.

"No..."

His hands trembled as he took the photograph.

The little boy couldn't have been older than four.

Standing beside young Elena.

Holding her hand.

Richard whispered one word.

"Michael..."

Elena looked up.

"I had a brother?"

Richard closed his eyes.

"Yes."

Silence filled the vault.

"My God..."

Elena whispered.

"Why didn't anyone tell me?"

Richard looked like a man reliving his worst nightmare.

"Because..."

"...everyone believed he died."

At that exact moment...

The lights inside Vault Seven suddenly went out.

Darkness swallowed the room.

Then a slow clap echoed from somewhere inside the vault.

One clap.

Then another.

A calm voice spoke from the shadows.

"I've been waiting a long time..."

"...for this family reunion."

A figure stepped into the emergency light.

Tall.

Well-dressed.

Face hidden in darkness.

Only one thing was visible.

Around the stranger's neck hung half of an old silver pendant.

Richard's eyes widened in horror.

"My son..."

May you like

The stranger smiled.

"It's been twenty-two years, Father."
