Chapter 3 - THE PROMISE

Khloe stared at Marcus for several seconds.
Then she laughed.
It was one small, empty sound.
âI can explain.â
She repeated his words as though they belonged to another language.
Marcus stepped closer.
âPlease.â
âWas she in your bed?â
He froze.
Julian looked away.
Dr. Cole quietly checked the fetal monitor.
Khloe waited.
âMarcus.â
His throat moved.
âYes.â
The answer hurt more than the kick.
Khloe closed her eyes.
âHow long?â
âIt wasnât what she made it sound like.â
âThat is not a number.â
âKhloe.â
âHow long?â
Marcus lowered his head.
âThree months.â
Khloe opened her eyes again.
Three months.
She was seven months pregnant.
She mentally counted backward.
âWhen did it start?â
Marcus said nothing.
She already knew.
âWhile I was pregnant.â
âIt started before I knew you were pregnant.â
âAnd continued after.â
His silence gave her the answer.
Khloe turned her face toward the window.
New York glittered beyond the glass.
Thousands of lights.
Thousands of strangers living ordinary lives.
She wondered how many women were standing in rooms just like this one, discovering that the life they thought they had never existed.
Marcus moved closer.
âI ended it.â
âWhen?â
âFive months ago.â
âBefore or after our anniversary?â
His eyes closed.
Khloe felt something inside her go cold.
âAfter.â
Marcus began talking quickly.
âI know how it sounds.â
She looked at him.
âYou slept with another woman while I was pregnant.â
âIt was wrong.â
âYou lied to me every day afterward.â
âYes.â
âYou brought her into my charity events.â
âI didnât invite her tonight.â
âDid you tell her you would leave me?â
Marcus hesitated again.
Khloeâs voice dropped.
âDid you?â
âI said things I shouldnât have said.â
âThat means yes.â
âI never planned to leave you.â
âBut you told her you would.â
âI was trying to end it without creating a scandal.â
Khloe stared at him.
âYou promised your mistress my life so she wouldnât embarrass you?â
âNo.â
âThat is exactly what you just said.â
Marcus rubbed both hands over his face.
âI was a coward.â
Finally.
One truthful sentence.
Khloe looked at Julian.
âWhat are the trust papers?â
Julianâs expression changed.
âI donât know.â
Marcus did.
Khloe saw that immediately.
âTell me.â
Marcus looked toward the door.
âNot tonight.â
âTell me.â
âThe Thorne family trust was restructured.â
âWhen?â
âSix months ago.â
Khloe frowned.
âMy signature was required.â
âYes.â
âI never signed anything.â
Marcus did not answer.
Her heart began pounding.
Julian stepped forward.
âWhat exactly was restructured?â
Marcus looked trapped.
âThe voting shares in Thorne Global.â
Khloe sat straighter despite the pain.
âMy motherâs shares?â
âYes.â
Khloeâs late mother had owned twelve percent of Thorne Global through an investment partnership created decades earlier.
When she died, those shares had passed to Khloe.
They were worth billions.
They were also the reason Marcusâs family could not remove Khloe from the companyâs board without her consent.
âWhat did you do?â
Marcus stared at her.
âI used a temporary authorization.â
âWhat authorization?â
âA signature page.â
âI didnât sign one.â
His face answered before his mouth did.
Khloeâs voice became almost inaudible.
âMarcus.â
âI thought you had.â
She stared at him.
âWho gave it to you?â
Marcus did not need to answer.
The name was already hanging in the room.
Isabella.
Julian swore quietly.
Khloe looked toward the tablet again.
He promised me once the trust papers were signed, youâd be gone.
Suddenly, Isabellaâs words carried a different meaning.
She had not simply been sleeping with Khloeâs husband.
She had been helping him move assets.
Khloe felt sick.
âWas my signature forged?â
Marcus said, âI donât know.â
Julian stepped closer.
âYou better find out.â
A knock sounded at the door.
The hospital security director entered.
He looked at Julian.
Then at Marcus.
âThereâs a problem.â
Julian frowned.
âWhat problem?â
The man held out a phone.
âMs. Rossiâs attorney just arrived.â
âThatâs not a problem.â
âHe says she has evidence.â
âEvidence of what?â
The security director glanced toward Khloe.
âHe says if Isabella is arrested tonight, she will release documents proving Marcus Thorne committed financial fraud.â
No one spoke.
Then Khloe looked directly at her husband.
May you like
Marcus did not look surprised.
