Chapter 19 - THE WOMAN IN RED

Khloe attended Isabellaâs hearing wearing white.
She did not plan the symbolism.
But the reporters noticed.
Isabella stood before the judge in a dark navy dress.
No diamonds.
No dramatic makeup.
No red.
Her attorney spoke first.
He described manipulation.
Emotional instability.
Richardâs influence.
Her cooperation with federal investigators.
Then the prosecutor stood.
She played seventeen seconds of the hospital video.
The courtroom watched Isabella shove Khloe.
Watched her strike her again.
Watched her kick a visibly pregnant woman to the floor.
No legal argument could make the footage less ugly.
Then Khloe was invited to speak.
She stood slowly.
Her pregnancy was obvious.
The room became silent.
Khloe looked toward Isabella.
âFor months, people have asked me whether I hate her.â
Isabella lowered her eyes.
âI did.â
Khloe continued.
âFor a while.â
âI hated her for sleeping with my husband.â
âI hated her for humiliating me.â
âI hated her for making me question whether my daughter would survive the night.â
âBut hatred is expensive.â
âAnd she has already taken enough from me.â
Isabella looked up.
Khloe met her eyes.
âI do not forgive what she did.â
âI may never forgive it.â
âBut I refuse to build the rest of my life around it.â
The courtroom remained completely still.
Khloe turned toward the judge.
âI want accountability.â
âNot revenge.â
âI want the court to remember that my child had no way to protect herself.â
âAnd I want Isabella to spend whatever sentence she receives understanding that one moment of rage can change lives forever.â
Khloe returned to her seat.
Isabella cried silently.
The judge imposed a custodial sentence followed by probation and mandatory treatment, taking her cooperation into account but emphasizing the severity of the attack.
As officers prepared to escort Isabella away, she turned.
âKhloe.â
Khloe stopped.
âIâm sorry.â
There was no performance in her voice now.
No audience she could charm.
No Marcus to win.
Khloe nodded once.
âI hope someday you understand why sorry isnât the same as repaired.â
Then she walked away.
Marcus waited outside the courthouse.
He stood behind the press barrier.
He did not approach until Khloe looked at him.
âHow did it go?â
âItâs over.â
He nodded.
âIâm glad.â
Khloe looked at him.
âYou look different.â
âI sleep now.â
âThat would do it.â
He smiled faintly.
They stood together in silence.
Then Khloe said, âThe divorce papers are ready.â
Marcusâs smile disappeared.
âI figured.â
âIâm filing tomorrow.â
His eyes dropped.
âOkay.â
She had imagined this moment a hundred times.
In every version, Marcus argued.
Begged.
Promised.
Instead, he simply nodded.
âIâll sign.â
Khloeâs throat tightened.
Marcus continued.
âI love you.â
âI probably always will.â
âBut I understand why loving me doesnât mean staying married to me.â
Khloe felt tears burn her eyes.
âYou finally learned something.â
âToo late.â
âMaybe.â
A reporter shouted Marcusâs name from across the sidewalk.
Neither of them looked.
Then a sudden pain tightened across Khloeâs abdomen.
She froze.
Marcus noticed immediately.
âWhat?â
Khloe inhaled.
Another pain came.
Stronger.
She looked down.
Then back at him.
âMarcus.â
His face went white.
âWhat?â
May you like
âI think our daughter just decided sheâs done waiting.â
