Chapter 11 - THE RECORDINGS

Elaine returned to New York under police protection.
She refused to speak without an attorney.
By midnight, she had one.
By one in the morning, she had a deal.
The recordings were stored on a cloud server.
There were seven files.
The first came from eighteen months earlier.
Richardâs voice was unmistakable.
âWe need Khloeâs voting block temporarily neutralized.â
Isabella answered.
âAnd afterward?â
âYou get the board seat.â
âWhat about Marcus?â
âMarcus will do what he always does.â
âWhat he believes is necessary.â
The second recording was worse.
Richard and Isabella discussed the signature authorization.
Isabella sounded nervous.
âShe didnât sign.â
Richard replied, âThen find a way around it.â
âIâm not forging her name.â
âI didnât ask you to.â
âYou didnât have to.â
The third recording came months later.
Isabella laughed.
âYour son is easier to control than you said.â
Richard replied coldly.
âDo not confuse sex with control.â
Khloe stopped the audio.
She stood in Rebeccaâs conference room with Marcus, Julian, and Detective Brooks.
Marcus looked as if someone had punched him.
Khloe almost felt sorry for him.
Almost.
âYou were part of their strategy.â
She said it quietly.
Marcus looked at her.
âI know.â
âNo.â
âYou were the distraction.â
âIsabella slept with you to keep you close.â
Marcus looked away.
Khloe continued.
âAnd you let her.â
He nodded.
âYes.â
There was no defense left.
Detective Brooks restarted the audio.
The fourth recording happened five months earlier.
Isabella sounded furious.
âYou said once the transfer was done, she would be out.â
Richard replied, âI said her influence would be out.â
âThatâs not what I want.â
âI do not care what you want.â
âI want Marcus.â
âThen take him.â
Khloeâs face changed.
Marcus whispered, âThat was when she started pushing me to leave.â
Rebecca stopped the recording again.
âRichard was encouraging the affair.â
Marcus stared at the table.
Brooks spoke.
âBecause the more unstable the marriage became, the easier it would be to isolate Khloe from corporate decisions.â
Khloeâs jaw tightened.
âMy marriage was a financial strategy.â
Marcus looked at her quickly.
âNot to me.â
She met his gaze.
âMaybe not.â
âBut your affair became one.â
The fifth recording involved Elaine.
Richard told her to monitor Khloeâs schedule.
The sixth involved the gala.
Isabella asked which private suite Khloe would use.
Elaine told her.
Everyone went still.
Julian stared at Elaine through the interview-room glass.
âShe gave Isabella the room.â
Brooks nodded.
The final recording played.
It had been made two weeks before the assault.
Isabellaâs voice.
âIf Khloe finds out about the trust, sheâll go to regulators.â
Richard answered.
âThen make sure she doesnât find out.â
âHow?â
A long silence followed.
Then Richard spoke again.
âI donât care.â
The recording ended.
No murder order.
No explicit command to attack Khloe.
But enough darkness to make everyone understand the environment he had created.
Marcus stood abruptly.
âIâm going to see him.â
Brooks blocked the door.
âNo.â
âHe did this.â
âHe manipulated all of us.â
Brooks looked him straight in the eye.
âAnd if you warn him, you could obstruct an investigation.â
Marcus stopped.
His phone rang.
Richard Thorne.
Everyone looked at the screen.
Marcus answered on speaker.
His fatherâs voice came through immediately.
âYou have twenty minutes to come home.â
Marcus said nothing.
Richard continued.
âIf you donât, everything your wife inherited disappears before sunrise.â
May you like
Then he hung up.
