Chapter 16 - THE RUN

Richard’s passport had been surrendered.

His private aircraft was grounded.

His accounts were being watched.

He still vanished.

Marcus understood how before the police did.

“The Hamptons.”

Detective Brooks frowned.

“We checked the house.”

“Not the house.”

Marcus grabbed his coat.

“My father bought an old marina through a shell company fifteen years ago.”

“There’s a seaplane.”

Brooks immediately called state police.

Khloe watched Marcus head toward the elevator.

“Where are you going?”

“To stop him.”

“No.”

He turned.

“He’s my father.”

“That is exactly why you should not go.”

Marcus looked at her.

“If he leaves the country, finding everything he hid becomes harder.”

“Let the police do it.”

“He knows places they don’t.”

Khloe stepped closer.

“You have spent your entire life cleaning up Richard Thorne’s disasters.”

“Stop.”

Marcus stared at her.

She softened slightly.

“Let him face what he did.”

For several seconds, Marcus said nothing.

Then he nodded.

Brooks’s team reached the marina fifty-two minutes later.

Richard was still there.

The seaplane engine had malfunctioned.

The irony would have been funny under different circumstances.

He was arrested while standing on the dock.

Inside the plane, police found two phones.

Three passports under false names.

Nearly two hundred thousand dollars in cash.

And one encrypted laptop.

The laptop changed everything.

It contained detailed records of the offshore accounts.

Payments to Thomas Greer.

Payments to Elaine.

Payments to Isabella.

Private communications.

And a folder labeled K.T.

Khloe’s initials.

Inside were reports on her daily movements.

Medical appointments.

Travel.

Board meetings.

Even photographs.

Marcus stared at the screen.

“He had her watched.”

Brooks nodded.

“For years.”

Khloe felt violated in a way she could not explain.

Her father-in-law had tracked her life as though she were a hostile acquisition.

Then investigators found the final document.

A contingency plan.

If Khloe discovered the financial diversion, Richard intended to push Marcus toward divorce using the forged prenup.

If Marcus refused, Richard planned to leak evidence of the affair.

If Khloe challenged the trust, Isabella’s contingent beneficiary status would trigger another legal battle.

Every outcome created delay.

Every delay protected the hidden money.

Marcus read the strategy memo twice.

Then he sat down.

“My father built my adultery into his business plan.”

Khloe stood across from him.

“He did.”

Marcus looked up.

“But I gave him the weapon.”

Khloe did not disagree.

That evening, prosecutors charged Richard with multiple financial crimes.

Isabella began negotiating a plea.

Elaine remained a cooperating witness.

And for the first time, Khloe thought the nightmare might be ending.

Then Dr. Cole called.

Khloe answered.

“Hello?”

The doctor’s voice was urgent.

“Khloe, I need you to come to the hospital now.”

Khloe’s hand moved instantly to her belly.

“What’s wrong?”

“I reviewed your latest bloodwork.”

“And I’m concerned about the baby.”
