Chapter 20 - THE LIFE AFTER

Evelyn Grace Thorne was born six hours later.
Five pounds, eleven ounces.
Tiny.
Furious.
Perfect.
Her cry filled the delivery room at 8:42 p.m.
Khloe burst into tears the instant she heard it.
Marcus did too.
He stood beside her in hospital scrubs, shaking harder than he had during any board crisis in his life.
The nurse placed Evelyn against Khloeâs chest.
Khloe stared at her daughter.
Everything else disappeared.
Richard.
Isabella.
The money.
The affair.
The cameras.
The headlines.
For one moment, none of it mattered.
âHi.â
Khloe whispered.
âIâve been waiting for you.â
Marcus touched one finger to Evelynâs tiny hand.
She closed her fist around it.
He laughed through tears.
Khloe looked at him.
There was love there.
There would probably always be love there.
But something had changed permanently.
Love was no longer permission.
It was no longer an excuse.
It was simply a feeling.
And feelings did not get to make decisions by themselves.
Three months later, the divorce became final.
There was no courtroom war.
No custody battle.
Marcus signed every agreement.
Khloe retained complete control of her inherited assets.
They shared parenting responsibilities under a detailed arrangement Rebecca had negotiated.
Marcus purchased a townhouse six blocks away.
Close enough to be Evelynâs father.
Far enough to respect Khloeâs new life.
Richard remained in federal custody awaiting trial.
The hidden funds continued returning to Khloeâs estate.
Thorne Global appointed independent leadership.
The company survived.
So did Marcus.
He founded a smaller investment firm with none of his fatherâs money.
For the first time in his life, the Thorne name did not automatically open every door.
Khloe thought that might be good for him.
Her foundation opened its first maternal support center the following spring.
Julian stood beside her at the ribbon cutting.
Evelyn slept against Khloeâs shoulder.
Marcus watched from the back of the crowd.
He had not asked to stand beside her.
Khloe appreciated that.
After the ceremony, she walked toward him.
âYou came.â
âYou invited me.â
âFor Evelyn.â
âI know.â
Marcus looked at their daughter.
âShe looks like you.â
âShe has your stubbornness.â
âThat seems unfair.â
Khloe smiled.
For a second, they were simply themselves again.
Then Marcus handed her an envelope.
âWhat is this?â
âIt came to my office yesterday.â
âNo return address.â
Khloeâs smile disappeared.
She opened it.
Inside was one photograph.
Richard Thorne.
Thomas Greer.
A third man Khloe did not recognize.
The photograph had been taken nearly ten years earlier.
Behind them was the logo of Rossi Meridian Bank.
On the back, a message had been written by hand.
RICHARD DID NOT START THIS.
Khloe stared at the words.
Marcus leaned closer.
âThereâs something else.â
He handed her a second piece of paper.
A copy of an old transaction.
The date was seventeen years earlier.
Years before Khloe met Marcus.
Years before their marriage.
Years before Isabella entered either of their lives.
The transaction involved her motherâs original Thorne Global shares.
Khloe looked at the authorization line.
Her breath stopped.
The signature belonged to someone she knew.
Someone who should never have been connected to the Thorne family.
She looked at Julian across the room.
Her uncle was laughing with one of the foundation doctors.
Marcus followed her gaze.
âWhat is it?â
Khloe could barely speak.
âThe signature.â
âWhat about it?â
She looked down again.
Then back at the man who had protected her throughout everything.
âItâs Julianâs.â
Marcus went still.
Across the room, Julian slowly turned.
His smile disappeared.
For a long second, uncle and niece stared at each other.
Then Julian looked at the envelope in Khloeâs hand.
And Khloe saw something in his face she had never seen before.
Fear.
The story she thought had ended with Isabellaâs arrest had begun long before Isabella ever entered the room.
Long before Marcus betrayed her.
Long before Richard touched her inheritance.

And as Julian started walking toward her, Khloe finally understood that the most dangerous secret in her family might not belong to the Thornes at all.
