Chapter 9 - Margaret’s Secret

Police treated Margaret as a potentially endangered missing person.
For forty-eight hours, nobody heard from her.
Ethan became increasingly frantic.
Claire remained guarded.
She hated Margaret for what she had done to Lily.
But hatred did not mean she wanted the woman harmed.
Then investigators found airport footage.
Margaret had not been alone.
She had arrived with Victor Hale.
They argued beside her car.
Victor grabbed her arm.
Margaret pulled away.
Ten minutes later, Victor drove away alone.
Claire watched the footage beside Ethan at Jonathan’s office.
Ethan’s face hardened.
“I’m going to kill him.”
Claire turned.
“No.”
“He touched my mother.”
“And your mother touched our daughter.”
Ethan looked at her.
“You really can’t stop, can you?”
Claire stood.
“No.”
“I can’t stop remembering that my four-year-old was covered in food while you defended the person who did it.”
Ethan lowered his eyes.
The anger left him.
“You’re right.”
Daniel interrupted.
“Victor has disappeared too.”
His phone had been turned off.
His home was empty.
His passport remained in a safe.
Then Daniel produced an unexpected discovery.
A storage locker rented in Margaret’s name.
Police had obtained access because of the missing-person investigation.
Inside were financial records dating back more than a decade.
Claire’s father’s name appeared repeatedly.
So did Ethan’s.
But one folder contained Claire’s name.
Jonathan opened it.
Inside were photographs.
Claire leaving school.
Claire at college.
Claire at work.
Claire attending charity events.
Some photographs had been taken before she ever met Ethan.
Claire looked at him.
“You knew.”
Ethan went pale.
“I didn’t.”
“These were in your mother’s possession.”
“I swear to you.”
Claire picked up another photograph.
It showed Ethan standing across the street from a restaurant where Claire was eating with friends.
The date was eight months before they officially met.
Ethan sat down heavily.
“I don’t remember this.”
Claire stared at him.
“You followed me.”
“No.”
“My mother told me about you.”
The room went silent.
Claire’s voice dropped.
“When?”
Ethan closed his eyes.
“When I was twenty-four.”
“Years before we met.”
“She told me your father had ruined our family.”
“She said he falsely accused her of theft.”
Claire laughed bitterly.
“And you believed her.”
“Yes.”
“Did you approach me because of her?”
Ethan did not answer immediately.
That delay hurt more than any lie.
Finally, he whispered.
“At first.”
Claire felt something inside her collapse.
Ethan continued quickly.
“But then I fell in love with you.”
Claire stepped backward.
“No.”
“Claire.”
“No.”
“Our entire marriage started as revenge.”
“It didn’t stay that way.”
“You don’t get to decide which part matters.”
Jonathan quietly closed the folder.
Then Daniel’s phone rang.
He listened.
His expression sharpened.
“They found Margaret.”
Ethan stood.
“Where?”
Daniel looked directly at Claire.
“She walked into a police station twenty miles away.”
May you like
“She says Victor tried to kill her.”
“And she says she has evidence that Ethan helped him.”
