Chapter 8 - The Camera

The video lasted seven seconds.
A gloved hand touched Lily’s pillow.
Then the screen went black.
Claire felt pure fear.
Daniel immediately traced the message.
The number was disposable.
Police were sent to Claire’s house.
Ethan arrived there before anyone else.
When officers entered, they found no intruder.
But Lily’s room had been disturbed.
Her closet was open.
Several toys were missing.
So was the dresser drawer where Claire had temporarily hidden the forged transfer before photographing it.
Whoever entered had known exactly where to look.
Claire refused to return.
That evening, Ethan asked to meet her at Jonathan’s office.
Claire agreed only because Daniel and Jonathan would remain nearby.
Ethan looked exhausted when he arrived.
He placed his phone on the table.
“My mother disappeared.”
Claire stared at him.
“When?”
“Two hours ago.”
“Maybe she ran.”
“I don’t think so.”
He showed Claire a message Margaret had sent.
I fixed what I could.
I’m sorry about Lily.
Do not trust Victor.
Claire read it twice.
“That doesn’t sound like your mother.”
“No.”
Ethan rubbed his face.
“She never apologizes.”
He opened another file on his phone.
Bank statements.
“I found these in her desk.”
The statements showed payments from Northstar Consulting to Victor Hale.
Hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Then Claire noticed another recipient.
E.W. Holdings.
She looked at Ethan.
“What is that?”
He shook his head.
“Not mine.”
Jonathan entered.
“I checked.”
“E.W. Holdings was formed three years ago.”
“Owner information is hidden behind a registered agent.”
Claire turned toward Ethan.
“Convenient initials.”
“I swear I’ve never heard of it.”
Claire watched him carefully.
For years, she had trusted his smile.
His apologies.
His explanations.
That trust was gone.
Now every word required evidence.
Jonathan continued.
“There is one more thing.”
He placed a court filing on the table.
Northstar had submitted an emergency petition claiming Claire was mentally incompetent to manage the trust.
Claire stared at the page.
“What?”
Ethan looked equally stunned.
The filing alleged emotional instability, reckless financial behavior, and episodes of aggression.
Attached as evidence was a video.
Jonathan played it.
Claire saw herself grabbing the birthday cake.
Throwing it into Ethan’s face.
The recording ended immediately afterward.
Nothing showed Margaret humiliating Lily.
Nothing showed the food covering her daughter.
Nothing showed the serving spoon.
Only Claire attacking her husband.
Claire’s stomach turned.
“They planned the camera angle.”
Jonathan nodded.
“The petition was submitted less than an hour after the party.”
Claire looked at Ethan.
“Who filmed this?”
He stared at the screen.
“I don’t know.”
Claire leaned closer.
“The only people standing in that direction were Victor and your mother.”
Then Daniel entered quickly.
“We found Margaret’s car.”
Ethan stood.
“Where?”
“At Logan Airport.”
Claire asked the question nobody wanted to ask.
“Was she on a flight?”
Daniel shook his head.
May you like
“The car was abandoned.”
“And there was blood on the driver’s seat.”
