Chapter 12 - The Ledger
Daniel locked the storage unit.
Claire grabbed the red ledger.
“Back exit?”
“No.”
Daniel drew Claire behind a concrete column.
The SUV stopped outside.
Two men stepped out.
One carried a crowbar.
The other carried a handgun tucked visibly under his jacket.
Daniel immediately called police.
Claire’s heart hammered.
The men began striking the lock.
Then another vehicle screeched into the corridor.
Ethan jumped out.
Claire stared in disbelief.
“What are you doing here?”
“I tracked your phone.”
Daniel cursed.
“That means Victor may have too.”
Ethan looked at the storage unit.
“Is the evidence inside?”
Claire held up the ledger.
The lock broke.
One man pulled the door upward.
Daniel shouted.
“Police are coming.”
The men hesitated.
Ethan stepped between Claire and the opening.
Then sirens sounded.
Both intruders ran.
One jumped into the SUV.
The other fled between storage buildings.
Police captured him less than ten minutes later.
His name was Marcus Cole.
He worked private security for Victor.
During questioning, Marcus refused to discuss Victor.
But investigators found cash transfers from Northstar Consulting into his account.
Margaret’s shell company had been paying him.
Claire confronted Margaret.
“You paid the man who threatened my daughter?”
Margaret looked horrified.
“No.”
“Northstar paid him.”
“Victor controlled the operating account.”
“You gave him access.”
Margaret lowered her head.
“Yes.”
Claire’s voice trembled.
“Every terrible thing you say you didn’t intend happened because you opened the door.”
Margaret said nothing.
She had no defense.
That evening, Jonathan submitted evidence proving the partnership agreement was fraudulent.
The emergency competency petition against Claire was also challenged.
The unedited birthday video became essential.
But nobody had it.
The version submitted to court had been carefully trimmed.
Claire remembered cameras throughout the dining room.
Ethan checked the home security system remotely.
All footage from that day had been deleted.
“Who had administrator access?”
Claire asked.
“Me.”
“Anyone else?”
Ethan hesitated.
“My mother.”
Margaret shook her head.
“I didn’t delete it.”
Then Lily spoke from the doorway.
Everyone turned.
Rebecca had brought her to Jonathan’s office after preschool.
Lily held a small pink tablet.
“I have the birthday movie.”
Claire knelt.
“What birthday movie?”
Lily smiled shyly.
“I was making a video for Mommy.”
Claire took the tablet.
Lily had accidentally recorded almost twelve minutes.
The footage began beneath the dining table.
Children laughed.
Adults talked.
Then Margaret’s voice became clear.
“Where is the envelope?”
Lily answered.
“I thought it was mine.”
A chair moved.
Then Victor’s voice spoke.
“Get it away from her.”
Claire froze.
The footage showed Margaret seize the document.
Then Victor whispered.
“If Claire sees that, everything is over.”
Margaret ordered Lily to stop touching adult things.
Lily started crying.
Victor said something even worse.
“Make it look like the child caused a scene.”
Seconds later, food struck Lily.
Claire covered her mouth.
Margaret looked sick.
Ethan stared at Victor’s shadow on the video.
Then the recording captured one final sentence.
Victor whispered to Margaret.
“Once Claire is declared unstable, Ethan signs the rest.”
Ethan slowly looked at Claire.
“I never agreed to that.”
Claire believed one thing now.
Victor had been planning to use all of them.
But the video also proved Margaret had willingly participated until the moment she crossed a line even she could no longer justify.
Claire copied the recording immediately.
Then Jonathan received notice from the court.

And this time, he claimed Ethan had already transferred his marital rights to him.
