Chapter 1 - The Call

Claire kept Lily pressed against her chest while the birthday room remained frozen around them.

Pink frosting slid slowly down Ethan’s jaw.

Margaret still held the empty serving spoon as if she could not believe anyone had finally challenged her.

Claire raised the phone to her ear.

“Say that again.”

The voice belonged to Jonathan Pierce, the attorney who had handled her late father’s estate.

“Claire, I need you to listen carefully.”

“We completed the final audit of the Whitmore Family Trust this morning.”

“There are unauthorized withdrawals.”

Claire’s grip tightened around Lily.

“How much?”

Jonathan hesitated.

“Just over eight hundred thousand dollars.”

Claire stopped breathing.

Across the room, Ethan’s face changed.

Margaret’s expression changed too.

Neither could hear Jonathan, but both seemed to understand exactly what the call concerned.

Claire noticed it immediately.

That terrified look between them had not been confusion.

It had been recognition.

Jonathan continued.

“Several withdrawals were approved using your electronic signature.”

“I never approved anything.”

“I know.”

“We compared the authorization records with your travel history.”

“Two of the largest transfers were made while you were in Seattle last November.”

Claire remembered that week clearly.

She had been attending a medical technology conference.

Ethan had stayed home.

Margaret had visited almost every day.

Jonathan lowered his voice.

“There is something else.”

“The receiving account belongs to Whitmore Holdings.”

Claire looked directly at Ethan.

Whitmore Holdings was his private company.

The same company he constantly claimed was struggling.

The same company Claire had quietly helped keep alive for years.

“What happened?”

Ethan demanded.

Claire ignored him.

Jonathan continued.

“I need you to come to my office tonight.”

“Why tonight?”

“Because somebody tried to access the trust again twenty minutes ago.”

Claire looked at the clock.

Twenty minutes ago, everyone in the room had been singing happy birthday.

Everyone except Ethan.

He had disappeared into his study for several minutes.

Claire remembered hearing the door close.

Her stomach turned cold.

“Was the attempt successful?”

“No.”

“I froze everything.”

A chair scraped behind her.

Margaret stepped forward.

“Claire, whatever that phone call is about can wait.”

Claire slowly lowered the phone.

Jonathan was still speaking.

“Do not tell Ethan or Margaret that the accounts are frozen.”

Claire looked directly at them.

“Why?”

Jonathan paused.

“Because the authorization request came from inside your house.”

Claire’s eyes moved toward Ethan’s study.

Ethan followed her gaze.

He went pale.

Claire kissed Lily’s forehead.

Then she looked at the guests.

“The party is over.”

Margaret’s mouth dropped open.

“You cannot throw my friends out.”

Claire turned toward her.

“Your friends?”

“This is Lily’s birthday.”

“And this is my house.”

Ethan wiped frosting from his face.

“You’re being ridiculous.”

Claire smiled without warmth.

“Am I?”

She carried Lily upstairs.

Behind her, voices erupted.

But Claire did not stop.

She cleaned the mashed potatoes from Lily’s hair in the bathroom.

Lily remained unusually quiet.

Then the little girl whispered something that made Claire’s hands stop.

“Grandma was angry because Daddy gave me the wrong envelope.”

Claire slowly looked at her daughter.

“What envelope?”

Lily pointed toward the pocket of her ruined pink dress.

Claire reached inside.

Her fingers touched folded paper.

She pulled it out.

It was not a birthday card.

May you like

It was a bank document.

And at the bottom was Claire’s forged signature.
