Chapter 17 - Claire’s Counterattack
Claire stopped reacting.
She started moving.
Jonathan filed civil claims against Northstar, Victor, and every entity involved in the forged transfers.
Bank accounts were frozen.
The redevelopment lender suspended foreclosure activity.
Claire submitted Lily’s full birthday recording to the court.
The competency petition collapsed immediately.
Victor’s edited video had shown Claire attacking Ethan.
The full recording showed why.
Margaret humiliating Lily.
Victor manipulating the scene.
Ethan refusing to protect his daughter.
Then Claire throwing the cake.
The judge watched the entire video.
When it ended, he looked toward Victor’s attorney.
“You presented an edited recording to this court as evidence of instability?”
The attorney immediately distanced himself.
“We received the footage from our client.”
The judge’s expression hardened.
“Your client should obtain criminal counsel.”
Claire almost smiled.
Outside court, reporters gathered.
The story had leaked.
But Claire refused interviews.
Lily’s pain would not become entertainment.
Instead, she issued one written statement.
My daughter is not evidence, content, leverage, or collateral.
She is a child.
The adults who forgot that will answer for their choices.
The statement spread everywhere.
Whitmore Holdings clients began calling Ethan.
Several contracts were suspended.
His company teetered near collapse.
Claire did not intervene.
Ethan had to face consequences too.
He visited Lily under Claire’s supervision.
At first, Lily barely spoke to him.
Ethan did not pressure her.
He brought no expensive gifts.
No excuses.
He sat on the floor and helped her build a plastic castle.
Finally Lily asked.
“Why didn’t you stop Grandma?”
Ethan’s eyes filled.
“Because I was wrong.”
“Were you scared?”
“Yes.”
“Of Grandma?”
Ethan nodded.
“A little.”
Lily looked confused.
“But you’re big.”
Ethan gave a sad smile.
“Big people can still be scared.”
“Does that make being mean okay?”
“No.”
Ethan answered immediately.
“It never does.”
Claire listened from the doorway.
For once, he had given Lily the truth without protecting himself.
Afterward, Ethan approached Claire.
“I’m closing Whitmore Holdings.”
Claire was surprised.
“You don’t have to.”
“Yes.”
“I built too much of it using lies, debt, and shortcuts.”
“I need to start over.”
Claire folded her arms.
“And us?”
Ethan looked at her.
“I don’t get to ask for us.”
“That decision belongs to you.”
Claire appreciated the answer.
But she was not ready to make it.
Then Jonathan called.
Victor had offered prosecutors a deal.
In exchange for reduced charges, he would provide evidence proving Margaret had personally authorized every fraudulent transfer.
