Chapter 5: The Secret Valeria Buried

For several seconds, neither of them moved.
Alejandro stared at his wife, searching her face for an answer.
Not an excuse.
Not a perfect explanation.
Just the truth.
“Valeria,” he said quietly, “what happened before our wedding?”
Her lips parted, but no words came.
That silence hurt more than any confession.
Because Alejandro knew silence.
He had lived with it for two years.
“Tell me.”
Valeria looked down at her hands.
“I wanted to.”
“When?”
“Many times.”
“Then why didn’t you?”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Because your family already hated me. I knew if they found out, they would use it against me.”
Alejandro stepped back.
“What did they know?”
Valeria took a deep breath.
“Before I met you, I worked at a small art restoration studio in Coyoacán.”
He nodded.
He knew that part.
It was one of the things he loved about her.
She was talented.
Humble.
Different from everyone in his world.
“One of our clients was an elderly woman named Isabel Navarro.”
Alejandro frowned.
“The famous collector?”
“Yes.”
Isabel Navarro was a legendary art collector whose private collection was worth millions.
“She trusted me with restoring a painting that had been missing for decades.”
Valeria’s voice became softer.
“I discovered something hidden behind the painting.”
“What?”
“A letter.”
She looked at him.
“A letter written by your grandfather.”
Alejandro froze.
His grandfather had built the foundation of the Aranda empire.
“What did it say?”
Valeria closed her eyes.
“He admitted that part of the Aranda fortune was stolen from Isabel’s family.”
Silence.
“That’s impossible.”
“I thought so too.”
“Then why hide it?”
“Because when I showed the letter to your family, they didn’t deny it.”
Alejandro felt his stomach drop.
“They threatened you.”
Valeria nodded.
“Your mother told me that if the letter ever became public, she would destroy my reputation. She said no one would believe a poor art conservator over the Aranda family.”
Alejandro looked away.
The pieces were connecting.
The threats.
The isolation.
The fear.
His family wasn’t protecting their name.
They were protecting a crime.
“Where is the letter now?”
Valeria looked toward the old painting hanging in their bedroom.
The one Alejandro had given her as a wedding gift.
“Hidden.”
His eyes followed hers.
“Here?”
She nodded slowly.
“I knew they would search everywhere else.”
Alejandro walked toward the painting.
His hands trembled as he removed it from the wall.
Behind the frame was a small compartment.
Inside was a sealed envelope.
But before he could open it, the bedroom lights suddenly went out.
A loud crash came from downstairs.
Then the mansion alarm began ringing.
Valeria grabbed his arm.
“Alejandro…”
He looked toward the door.
Someone was inside the house.
May you like
Someone who knew exactly where they were.
And they had come to destroy the final piece of evidence.
