Chapter 5 - Margaret’s Arrangement

The party ended without anyone officially ending it.

Guests drifted away in embarrassed clusters.

Half the gifts remained unopened.

The cake was untouched.

The photographer packed in silence.

Only family stayed.

Margaret ordered the staff to close the garden doors.

“No one leaves until this is explained.”

Ryan laughed bitterly.

“You don’t get to say that.”

His cheek was still red.

Margaret turned.

“I have protected you your entire life.”

“That’s exactly the problem.”

Vanessa stood near the projection screen.

I sat because my back had begun aching.

Julia remained beside me.

Thomas Whitmore looked as if he had aged ten years in an hour.

I asked the question first.

“Why did Margaret contact Vanessa?”

Nobody answered.

I looked at Vanessa.

She finally spoke.

“Six months ago, Margaret called me.”

Ryan closed his eyes.

Vanessa continued.

“She said Ryan was unhappy.”

“I never said that,” Margaret snapped.

“You said his marriage had become medically complicated.”

I felt Julia’s hand tighten around mine.

Margaret looked at me.

“I was concerned about your health.”

“By calling his ex?”

“I was concerned about Ryan too.”

Vanessa laughed once.

“You told me Claire might never carry a child to term.”

The room went silent.

My hands moved protectively over my belly.

Margaret’s face went white.

“I said the family had suffered.”

“You said Ryan deserved another chance at a normal future.”

Ryan stood.

“That’s enough.”

“No,” I said.

He looked at me.

“For once, let her finish.”

Vanessa did.

Margaret arranged their first meeting at a private club downtown.

She claimed Ryan needed someone who understood the pressure of being a Whitmore.

Ryan told Vanessa the meeting was accidental.

Then they began seeing each other.

At first, supposedly only for coffee.

Then dinners.

Then Suite 402.

I looked at Ryan.

“How long?”

He stared at the floor.

“Four months.”

I nodded slowly.

Four months.

While he rubbed my feet.

While he painted the nursery.

While he cried during ultrasounds.

Four months.

Then Vanessa said something else.

“Last night wasn’t just about us.”

Ryan looked up sharply.

“Stop.”

Vanessa ignored him.

“He brought papers.”

“What papers?” Julia asked.

Vanessa looked at me.

“Divorce documents.”

My heart stopped.

“He planned to file after the baby shower.”

Ryan stepped toward her.

“You said you wouldn’t—”

Thomas slammed his palm against the table.

“Sit down.”

Ryan froze.

I had never heard his father raise his voice.

Thomas pointed at the chair.

“Sit.”

Ryan did.

Vanessa continued.

Ryan planned to tell me after the shower that he wanted a separation.

But first, he needed me to sign several “insurance updates” related to the birth.

Julia’s face hardened.

“The proxy.”

Vanessa nodded.

“He said once the baby was born, everything would be easier.”

I whispered, “For who?”

Vanessa looked ashamed.

“For him.”

Margaret stared at Ryan.

“You told me you were only protecting the family assets.”

He snapped.

“You started this.”

Margaret flinched.

Ryan stood again.

“You brought Vanessa back.”

“You kept telling me Claire might lose the baby.”

“I never said that.”

“Yes, you did.”

“No.”

He looked at me.

“I said the doctors were monitoring you.”

I remembered every appointment.

Every moment Ryan volunteered to speak privately with nurses.

Every form he offered to carry.

My blood went cold.

Julia noticed.

“What?”

I looked at her.

“He had access to all my medical records.”

Ryan immediately said, “Because I’m her husband.”

Julia stared at him.

“Not anymore in any meaningful sense.”

Then my phone rang.

My obstetrician’s office.

I answered.

The nurse sounded confused.

“Mrs. Whitmore, I’m calling about the request we received this morning.”

“What request?”

“For copies of your complete prenatal and psychiatric history.”

I stood despite Julia trying to stop me.

“Who requested them?”

May you like

The nurse hesitated.

“Your husband.”
