Chapter 12 - What Ryan Asked the Doctor

I did not accuse Ryan of causing my miscarriages.

I refused to let grief become speculation.

We called Dr. Voss.

He agreed to meet with attorneys present.

The next morning, he entered Julia’s office carrying a file.

He looked terrified.

“I should have reported this years ago.”

My heart pounded.

“Reported what?”

“Mr. Whitmore asked about your treatment.”

Ryan sat across the room with his attorney.

“What specifically?” Julia asked.

Dr. Voss opened the file.

“After the first miscarriage, Ryan wanted to know whether stress could cause another.”

I looked at Ryan.

He stared at his hands.

“Then?”

“He asked about medications.”

“What medications?”

“Which ones were essential.”

“Which ones were optional.”

“And what might happen if records incorrectly showed noncompliance.”

My stomach tightened.

Julia’s voice sharpened.

“Did he ask you to change records?”

“No.”

“Did he ask you to stop medication?”

“No.”

“Did he interfere with Claire’s prescriptions?”

“Not through me.”

I exhaled slightly.

Then Dr. Voss continued.

“But he asked whether a history of recurrent pregnancy loss could support a future claim of medical incapacity.”

The room went silent.

Ryan whispered, “That’s not what I meant.”

Dr. Voss looked at him.

“You asked whether repeated losses could help establish that your wife was too medically fragile to manage family financial decisions.”

I felt something inside me break.

Not because he had harmed the pregnancies.

There was still no evidence of that.

Because he had used my grief as research.

While I mourned two babies, Ryan had been thinking about legal leverage.

I stood.

He stood too.

“Claire.”

“No.”

“I never wanted you to miscarry.”

“I believe you.”

He looked surprised.

I continued.

“That’s not the defense you think it is.”

His face fell.

“You watched me bleed.”

“You watched me grieve.”

“And afterward, you asked whether my pain could make you richer.”

He began crying.

I had never seen him cry like that.

Once, those tears would have destroyed me.

Now they simply looked like consequences arriving.

Dr. Voss gave Julia copies of every communication.

One email from Ryan stood out.

If Claire becomes pregnant again and carries successfully, does childbirth itself create a temporary incapacity window?

Dated eleven months earlier.

Before this pregnancy began.

Ryan had been planning around the birth before our daughter even existed.

Julia turned to him.

“Why?”

Ryan wiped his face.

“Because I learned about the Caldwell voting rights.”

I whispered, “From who?”

He looked toward Margaret.

She shook her head.

“Not me.”

“Then who?”

Ryan answered.

“Vanessa.”

My stomach dropped.

Vanessa had told Ryan about my family trust.

But according to her, she had only come back into his life six months earlier.

Ryan’s email was eleven months old.

Which meant they had both lied about when their contact resumed.

I called Vanessa.

No answer.

Then a message appeared.

Claire, I need to tell you what really happened before Ryan and I started sleeping together.

A second message came.

I wasn’t brought back because of romance.

I was hired to find your trust documents.
