Chapter 10 - Margaret Disappears

Margaret’s car was found at O’Hare.
No boarding pass.
No checked luggage.
No usable camera footage after she entered a private parking structure.
She had not been kidnapped.
At least, there was no evidence of it.
She had left deliberately.
Ryan blamed me.
That lasted thirty seconds.
Then Thomas told him the truth about Arthur.
Ryan stopped speaking.
I watched his face collapse in stages.
Disbelief.
Anger.
Shame.
Then something harder.
Ambition.
“Seventeen percent?”
Those were his first words.
Thomas stared at him.
“Did you hear anything I said?”
“I heard you.”
“You learned the man you called Grandfather may have been your biological father.”
“And he left me seventeen percent.”
I looked at Julia.
There it was.
Everything explained in one response.
Ryan had become so obsessed with control that even the ugliest family truth converted instantly into ownership.
Thomas slammed the folder closed.
“You will get nothing if fraud is proven.”
Ryan’s face changed.
“What fraud?”
Julia answered.
“The forged insurance documents.”
“The proxy.”
“The altered medical records.”
Ryan stood.
“I didn’t alter those.”
“You requested them.”
“My mother did.”
“Because you told her to.”
“Not to falsify anything.”
Then he looked at me.
“Claire, you have to believe me on one thing.”
I almost laughed.
“No, I don’t.”
He stepped closer.
“I cheated.”
“Yes.”
“I lied.”
“Yes.”
“I planned the separation.”
“Yes.”
His voice cracked.
“But I never wanted you or the baby hurt.”
I stared at him.
“That is a very low standard for a husband.”
He looked away.
Julia received a call from the police.
Margaret had used a credit card at a gas station in Indiana.
Heading east.
Thomas immediately knew where.
The Whitmores owned an old lake house in Michigan.
Arthur had used it privately.
Margaret had refused to sell it after his death.
We drove there with police aware of our destination.
Ryan came separately.
I did not want him with me.
But Thomas said Margaret might only talk if both men were present.
We reached the lake house near dusk.
Margaret’s car was outside.
The front door was unlocked.
Inside, the house smelled of dust and cedar.
Margaret sat beside the fireplace.
A metal box rested in her lap.
Ryan entered behind us.
“Mom.”
She looked at him.
For the first time, she seemed afraid of her own son.
“I wanted one more night before you hated me.”
Ryan stared at the box.
“Give me the letter.”
She shook her head.
“Ryan.”
“No.”
He moved closer.
Thomas stepped between them.
Margaret opened the box herself.
Inside were photographs.
Letters.
Medical records.
And one sealed envelope.
FOR RYAN.
He reached for it.
Margaret held it back.
“There is something you need to understand first.”
“What?”
She began to cry.
“Arthur wasn’t just your biological father.”
Ryan’s face hardened.
“What does that mean?”
Margaret looked at Thomas.
Then at me.
May you like
Then back at Ryan.
“He was also Vanessa’s grandfather.”
