Chapter 14 - The Second Plan

Edward arrived forty minutes later.

Julia had ordered him to come.

He was sixty-three.

Silver-haired.

Controlled.

A man who treated every room like a board meeting.

Julia played the recording without greeting him.

When it ended, she stared at her father.

“What was the second plan?”

Edward looked at me.

“I was trying to protect Claire.”

I almost laughed.

“That sentence is getting crowded.”

He sighed.

“Ryan planned to seek an emergency guardianship after the birth.”

My blood went cold.

“On what basis?”

“Postpartum mental incapacity.”

I understood the medical records.

The miscarriage photos.

The psychiatric history request.

The slideshow files Ryan had prepared.

He was building a narrative.

Grieving woman.

Difficult pregnancies.

Stress.

Hormones.

Potential postpartum instability.

Enough to ask a court for temporary control.

Not forever.

Just long enough.

“How did you know?” Julia asked.

“We monitored his financial attorney.”

“Without telling Claire?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I needed admissible evidence.”

I stood.

“You needed evidence more than I needed a warning?”

Edward’s face softened.

“I believed Ryan posed financial risk.”

“You knew he was cheating.”

“Later.”

“You knew he was collecting medical records.”

“Yes.”

“You knew he planned guardianship.”

“Yes.”

“And you let me sleep beside him.”

He had no answer.

That silence cost him more than any explanation could.

Then Edward revealed the second layer.

Ryan’s attorney had prepared a document naming Margaret as temporary guardian if Ryan himself appeared conflicted.

Ryan would remain financial manager.

Margaret would become personal guardian.

Together, they could control me and the baby on paper while appearing to protect us.

Margaret turned furious when she heard this.

“I never agreed to that.”

Edward slid the draft across the table.

Her signature appeared at the bottom.

Fake.

For once, Ryan had forged his own mother too.

Margaret stared at him.

He was not present.

His attorney had advised him to stop meeting with us.

Margaret whispered, “He used me.”

I looked at her.

“Yes.”

The realization shattered something in her.

For years, Margaret had controlled Ryan believing she was stronger.

Now she understood he had learned from her.

Then Edward produced one more file.

Ryan had opened a private trust account eighteen days earlier.

Beneficiary:

Baby Girl Whitmore.

Trustee:

Ryan Whitmore.

Contingent trustee:

Vanessa Hale.

Vanessa stood so quickly her chair fell backward.

“What?”

Edward looked at her.

“You didn’t know?”

“No.”

Ryan had planned a future where Vanessa helped control my daughter’s inheritance.

Maybe he intended to leave me.

Maybe he intended to marry Vanessa.

Maybe he believed he could build a new family using the wealth attached to my child.

Vanessa began crying.

“I never agreed.”

I believed her this time.

Because horror has a different face from guilt.

Then Julia’s assistant entered.

“Claire, there’s someone downstairs asking for you.”

“Who?”

“A woman named Melissa Grant.”

I didn’t know the name.

The assistant handed me an envelope.

Inside was a photograph.

Ryan holding a newborn baby.

Dated four years earlier.

Before our marriage.

On the back were five words.

Ask him about his son.
