Chapter 11 - Vanessa’s Real Connection

Ryan sat down hard.

Vanessa was not in Michigan.

She was still in Chicago.

Julia called her on speaker.

At first, Vanessa thought we were joking.

Then Thomas explained.

Vanessa’s mother, Laura Hale, was Arthur Whitmore’s unacknowledged daughter from another relationship.

That made Vanessa Arthur’s granddaughter.

Ryan was Arthur’s son.

Ryan and Vanessa were therefore uncle and niece by blood.

The room became silent enough to hear the lake against the shore.

Vanessa vomited.

We heard it through the phone.

Then she began screaming at Margaret.

“You knew?”

Margaret cried.

“I suspected.”

“You brought me back to him!”

“I didn’t know for certain.”

“You knew enough!”

Ryan stood.

“You knew?”

Margaret covered her face.

“I thought Laura’s father might have been someone else.”

“But you still arranged us meeting.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Her answer was almost impossible to believe.

Because she wanted to destroy Ryan’s claim.

Arthur’s trust contained a morality clause protecting the family foundation from scandal involving concealed lineage.

If Ryan became publicly involved with a close biological relative after lineage was verified, trustees could suspend his inheritance pending review.

Margaret had wanted Ryan close enough to Vanessa to frighten him away from pursuing the DNA claim.

But Ryan had gone far beyond what she intended.

“You used her,” I whispered.

Margaret looked at me.

“I was trying to stop him from becoming Arthur.”

“No.”

“You were trying to control him the way Arthur controlled you.”

She flinched.

Vanessa was crying on the phone.

Ryan looked physically ill.

For the first time, I felt something close to pity for him.

Then I remembered Suite 402.

Pity did not erase responsibility.

Margaret handed Ryan the envelope.

He tore it open.

Arthur’s letter was short.

He admitted Ryan was his son.

He admitted he had pressured Margaret into secrecy.

He described himself as ashamed.

Then came the final paragraph.

If Ryan ever seeks control through deception rather than stewardship, he is not to receive my voting shares.

Ryan read it twice.

His hands shook.

Thomas whispered, “He knew himself well enough to fear you might become like him.”

Ryan looked up.

“Everyone lied to me.”

I nodded.

“Yes.”

Then he looked at me.

“So you understand.”

“No.”

He seemed stunned.

“You understand why I needed control.”

“I understand why you were hurt.”

“That is not the same as permission to hurt me.”

He looked away.

Julia gathered the documents.

Margaret suddenly grabbed her wrist.

“Not all of them.”

Julia stopped.

Margaret removed one photograph.

It showed Ryan at the fertility clinic.

Beside him stood another man.

Not Thomas.

Not Arthur.

I recognized him immediately.

Dr. Michael Voss.

My former fertility specialist.

Margaret whispered:

“Ryan met with him privately before both of Claire’s miscarriages.”

The room changed.

Ryan went white.

“Mom.”

I looked at him.

“What did you discuss?”

May you like

He did not answer.

For the first time since this began, I was truly afraid of the answer.
