Chapter 13 - Vanessa Was Hired

Vanessa met me in a private room at Julia’s office.
She looked exhausted.
No makeup.
Hair tied back.
For the first time, she did not look like the glamorous woman from Suite 402.
She looked trapped.
“I worked for Caldwell Strategic Advisory,” she said.
I stared at her.
“That’s one of my family’s consulting firms.”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“Your uncle Edward hired me four years ago.”
Julia frowned.
“For what position?”
“Competitive intelligence.”
The phrase sounded cleaner than what she meant.
Vanessa researched corporate vulnerabilities.
Ownership structures.
Succession disputes.
Hidden liabilities.
Eleven months earlier, Edward asked her to review whether marriage could expose my voting rights to outside control.
Ryan’s name appeared immediately.
Vanessa knew him.
She did not tell Edward they had once been engaged.
Instead, she contacted Ryan privately.
“At first, I thought I was protecting you,” she said.
I laughed.
“You slept with him.”
“Not then.”
She insisted their affair began four months ago.
But their secret meetings began eleven months earlier.
Ryan gave her access to Whitmore documents.
Vanessa gave Ryan information about Caldwell trusts.
Each thought they were using the other.
Then attraction returned.
Then greed took over.
“Did Edward tell you to approach Ryan?”
“No.”
“Did he know?”
“No.”
Julia wrote rapidly.
“Why didn’t you report what Ryan was planning?”
Vanessa looked ashamed.
“Because by then I had helped him.”
“With what?”
“The proxy language.”
My chest tightened.
“You wrote it?”
“I found the clause.”
Ryan hired another attorney to draft the false authorization.
Vanessa showed him how my daughter’s future voting rights could be controlled by a guardian.
She claimed she never knew he would forge my signature.
I did not know whether I believed that.
Then she handed me a flash drive.
“What’s on it?”
“Recordings.”
“Of Ryan?”
“And Margaret.”
“And Edward.”
Julia looked up sharply.
“My father?”
Edward Caldwell was Julia’s father.
My mother’s older brother.
The man currently administering much of my family’s investment structure.
Vanessa swallowed.
“I think your uncle knew more than he admitted.”
We played the first recording.
Edward’s voice filled the room.
Ryan is ambitious, but ambition makes men predictable.
Then Vanessa.
What do you want me to find?
Edward answered.
Whether he intends to use Claire’s child to reach the Caldwell fund.
Julia went pale.
The recording continued.
Vanessa asked whether Claire should be warned.
Edward said:
Not yet.
If Ryan believes nobody suspects him, he’ll show us the entire plan.
I stopped the recording.
Julia stared at the screen.
“My father used you as bait.”
Vanessa nodded.
“And he used me as bait too.”
I looked at Julia.
She looked sick.
Edward had known Ryan might be targeting me.
He had chosen surveillance over warning me.
Maybe he wanted evidence.
Maybe he wanted control.
Either way, he had let me remain inside the trap.
The final recording was dated two weeks earlier.
Edward said:
The baby shower is the deadline.
Vanessa asked why.
His answer changed everything.
Because after the shower, Ryan plans to file for divorce.
If Claire signs the proxy before he files, he can argue it survived the separation.
Vanessa asked:
And if she refuses?
There was a long silence.
May you like
Then Edward said:
Then Ryan has a second plan.
