Chapter 8 - Sophie’s Money

Sophie’s biological mother, Emily Bennett, had died when Sophie was eighteen months old.

Emily came from an old California family.

Before her death, she created a trust for Sophie.

Ethan knew the basics.

He was trustee.

Sophie would receive controlled access at twenty-five.

Until then, the money was intended for education, health, housing, and long-term security.

Vanessa had never been part of it.

Or so Ethan thought.

Maria remembered seeing documents on Vanessa’s desk.

“They had Sophie’s name.”

“What else?”

“Something about successor trustee.”

Ethan opened the family safe.

The trust documents were still there.

He called the attorney who had prepared them.

By afternoon, he had his answer.

Six months earlier, Vanessa had contacted the attorney’s office.

She claimed Ethan wanted to revise the trust structure.

She asked what would happen if Ethan became incapacitated.

The attorney refused to discuss it without Ethan.

Vanessa tried again through another firm.

Maya discovered the consultation invoice.

Vanessa had paid it privately.

The new lawyer prepared a proposed guardianship and trust-management plan.

If Ethan died or became incapacitated, Vanessa wanted authority over Sophie’s care.

And access to distributions made for Sophie’s benefit.

It did not give Vanessa ownership of the trust.

But it would give her control.

Ethan stared at the document.

Maya remained careful.

“This is not proof she intended anything criminal.”

“I know.”

“But it is relevant.”

“Especially combined with Julian.”

Maya nodded.

Julian Hart had carried a life-insurance policy worth three million dollars.

Vanessa received most of it.

Ethan had known she inherited money.

He had not known Julian changed the beneficiary one month before his death.

Or tried to.

Claire had found copies.

Julian wanted half the policy redirected to his sister and mother.

The change was never processed because of a paperwork dispute.

Vanessa still collected.

Now Ethan saw the pattern forming.

Discredit.

Isolate.

Gain control.

Create a story before anyone asks questions.

That night, Sophie sat at the kitchen table coloring.

Ethan watched her draw three people.

Himself.

Sophie.

Maria.

No Vanessa.

“Who’s that?” he asked.

Sophie pointed.

“That’s Daddy.”

Then herself.

“That’s me.”

Then Maria.

“That’s Miss Maria.”

Ethan smiled gently.

“Where’s Vanessa?”

Sophie stopped coloring.

“She said Mommy Emily left because I cried too much.”

Ethan’s heart cracked.

Emily had died in a car accident.

Sophie could barely remember her.

Vanessa had taken even that grief and weaponized it.

Ethan crouched beside his daughter.

“Your mommy did not leave because of you.”

Sophie looked uncertain.

“She died because of an accident.”

“Vanessa said she wanted to go away.”

“That was not true.”

Sophie stared at the paper.

Then she whispered, “Vanessa says people leave when I’m bad.”

Ethan swallowed.

“I’m not leaving.”

Sophie finally looked at him.

“Promise?”

“Yes.”

“Even if I tell?”

May you like

Ethan understood.

“Especially if you tell.”
