Chapter 13 - The Bottle in the Cabinet

Ethan recognized the prescription immediately.
A sleep medication.
His doctor had prescribed it after a brutal stretch of international travel.
He had taken it twice.
Then stopped.
The bottle had disappeared months earlier.
Vanessa told him the housekeeper probably threw it away.
Maria denied ever seeing it.
Now a photograph of the bottle sat inside Vanessa’s secret archive.
Detective Ruiz asked one question.
“Do you still have the original?”
“No.”
“When did you last see it?”
“Maybe five months ago.”
“Did Vanessa know you stopped taking it?”
“Yes.”
Ruiz said nothing.
She did not need to.
A similar pattern now existed in two marriages.
A husband with a prescription.
Medication disappearing.
Documents questioning his stability.
Financial preparations.
Then Julian died.
Ethan was still alive.
That difference suddenly felt less accidental.
Maya immediately increased security.
No food or medication entered the house without review.
Vanessa was already prohibited from contact with Sophie.
Now Ethan’s team reviewed months of access logs.
One entry stood out.
Vanessa had visited Ethan’s private office at 2:13 a.m. during a night he remembered sleeping unusually heavily.
The camera inside the office had been disabled.
The next morning, he had signed two development contracts.
Nothing seemed wrong.
But the possibility made him sick.
Had Vanessa been experimenting with how easily she could control his environment?
Detective Ruiz remained cautious.
“We do not make conclusions before evidence.”
Ethan nodded.
But fear did not require a conclusion.
That afternoon, Vanessa’s attorney offered a settlement.
She would withdraw all claims involving Sophie.
In exchange, Ethan would agree to a private divorce.
No public statements.
No cooperation with media.
No discussion of Julian Hart.
And a financial payment of twelve million dollars.
Maya almost smiled when she read it.
“She wants money and silence.”
Ethan looked at the amount.
“Why twelve?”
“We’ll find out.”
Claire did.
Julian’s original insurance payout, investments, and property transfers were worth approximately six million dollars.
Vanessa had doubled the number.
Maybe coincidence.
Maybe not.
Ethan rejected the offer.
That evening, Vanessa sent him one direct message.
“You are letting Claire destroy your family the same way she destroyed mine.”
Ethan replied with three words.
“You hurt Sophie.”
Vanessa responded immediately.
“Prove it.”
Ethan looked toward the evidence folders.
For months, Vanessa had survived because she believed proof did not exist.

She still did not know how much had been recovered.
And Ethan decided she would not learn until court.
