Vanessa filed for divorce three days later.
Her petition accused Ethan of emotional abuse.
She claimed he had manipulated Sophie.
She alleged he used his wealth and security staff to intimidate her.
Then she requested temporary access to the Malibu house.
Maya was not surprised.
“She needs a counter-narrative.”
“She has one.”
“She has allegations.”
“That can be enough to create confusion.”
Ethan understood.
Confusion had always been Vanessa’s safest territory.
When everyone debated what happened, she escaped accountability for what she actually did.
The press learned about the divorce by afternoon.
Ethan Bennett was well-known in California real estate.
Vanessa knew that.
Photos of them at charity events appeared online.
Headlines described a “bitter custody dispute.”
Custody.
Vanessa had never adopted Sophie.
But some outlets assumed she was Sophie’s mother.
Vanessa’s representatives did not correct them.
Then an anonymous source told a gossip site that Ethan was “obsessed with controlling his young wife.”
Ethan refused to respond publicly.
Maya agreed.
“Court first.”
But Vanessa did something Ethan had not expected.
She accused Maria of extortion.
According to Vanessa, Maria had fabricated the household notes because she wanted money.
Maria panicked.
“I knew she would do this.”
Ethan looked at her.
“You are not alone.”
“She has lawyers.”
“So do I.”
“She has money.”
“So do I.”
Maria shook her head.
“That’s not what scares me.”
“What does?”
“She lies calmly.”
Ethan understood.
Vanessa’s greatest weapon was never rage.
It was composure.
Then Detective Ruiz called.
“We spoke to the medical examiner from Julian Hart’s case.”
“And?”
“There was something unusual.”
Ethan waited.
“Julian had a sedative in his bloodstream.”
“Was that known?”
“Yes.”
“Then why wasn’t it suspicious?”
“He had a prescription.”
Ruiz paused.
“But Claire says he stopped taking it months earlier.”
Ethan felt cold.
“Can that be proved?”
“We’re looking.”
Then Ruiz added:
“There is something else.”
“What?”
“The prescription was refilled two days before Julian died.”
“By Julian?”
“The pharmacy records say someone picked it up.”
“Who?”
“A woman.”
Ethan closed his eyes.
“Vanessa.”
“We’re retrieving the original signature.”
