Chapter 6 - The Promise

Ethan did not watch the footage alone.
He watched it with his attorney, Maya Reynolds, and a child-protection investigator.
They saw Vanessa lead Sophie down the hallway.
Sophie resisted.
Not violently.
She simply stopped walking.
Vanessa bent down.
The camera had no clear audio at that distance.
Then Sophie moved again.
Vanessa opened the blue-room door.
Sophie went inside.
The door closed.
Forty-seven minutes passed.
No one entered.
No one left.
The audio was faint.
But Sophie could be heard crying.
Then Vanessa’s voice.
“Stop.”
Later:
“You know what happens when you make Daddy angry.”
Then:
“He travels because he needs a break from you.”
Ethan had to stop the video.
He stood and walked to the window.
For years, his travel schedule had been a point of pride.
New developments.
International investors.
Expansion.
Awards.
He had built a company worth hundreds of millions.
And Vanessa had turned every flight into a threat against his daughter.
Maya gave him a minute.
Then she said quietly, “We need to discuss immediate custody and protective measures.”
“She is my wife.”
“I know.”
“I want her away from Sophie.”
“Then we document everything and follow the court process.”
Ethan hated that answer.
He wanted to lock every door.
Cancel Vanessa’s access.
Never let her within a mile of Sophie.
But Maya reminded him that emotion could not replace procedure.
By evening, temporary restrictions were in motion.
Vanessa learned before dinner.
She called Ethan nineteen times.
He answered the twentieth.
“You filed against me?”
“Yes.”
“You’re treating me like a criminal.”
“I’m treating Sophie like my daughter.”
Vanessa began crying.
“Ethan, please.”
He said nothing.
“You know I love her.”
“I know she is afraid of you.”
“She has been coached.”
“By whom?”
Silence.
Then Vanessa said, “Claire Hart.”
Ethan felt a chill.
“I never told you Claire contacted me.”
Vanessa stopped breathing for half a second.
It was enough.
“You knew.”
“No.”
“You knew she reopened Julian’s case.”
“Ethan, listen to me.”
“You knew.”
Vanessa’s voice changed.
The tears disappeared.
“Claire has been obsessed with destroying me for years.”
“So you knew.”
Another silence.
Then Vanessa whispered, “You have no idea what you are bringing into your home.”
Ethan looked toward Sophie’s bedroom.
“No.”
He lowered his voice.
“I finally know what I already brought into it.”
He ended the call.

Thirty minutes later, the house alarm sounded.
Someone had entered through the side gate.
