Chapter 18 - The Other Name
Vanessa’s claim stunned everyone.
She said Julian had been meeting someone secretly before his death.
A financial adviser.
A man named Peter Lang.
According to Vanessa, Peter helped Julian move money.
She suggested Peter might have had a motive.
Detective Ruiz investigated.
Peter existed.
He had met Julian.
But not secretly.
He was helping Julian separate his finances before divorce.
Bank records confirmed it.
Vanessa had taken a true fact and bent it into suspicion.
Again.
Then Peter produced something nobody expected.
A voicemail from Julian.
He had saved it because Julian sounded frightened.
“Peter, Vanessa knows about Friday.”

The day Julian planned to leave.
“I think she went through my office.”
Then Julian lowered his voice.
“If I don’t show up, send Claire the file.”
“What file?” Ruiz asked.
Peter opened a locked archive.
The file contained financial statements.
Emails.
Screenshots.
And one photograph.
Vanessa standing inside a pharmacy.
The timestamp was two days before Julian died.
The same day his prescription was collected.
Claire covered her face.
Police now had video confirmation.
Still, the central question remained.
How did Julian fall?
There had been no witness.
No surviving camera facing the balcony.
No physical evidence strong enough after six years to reconstruct every second.
Then the second hard drive from Vanessa’s storage unit finished processing.
Most files were corrupted.
One audio track survived.
The timestamp was the night Julian died.
Wind.
Ocean.
A sliding door.
Julian’s voice.
“Give me my phone.”
Vanessa.
“Stop being dramatic.”
Julian again.
“I’m leaving.”
Then movement.
A crash inside the room.
Julian shouted.
“Don’t touch me.”
The audio became distorted.
Then silence.
There was no recording of the fall itself.
No direct proof of exactly what happened at the balcony.
But there was enough to destroy Vanessa’s claim that she had been asleep and knew nothing until afterward.
She had been there.
She had been arguing with him.
She had lied to investigators.
Detective Ruiz looked at Claire.
“This changes the case.”
Claire whispered, “Will she be arrested?”
Ruiz did not promise.
“We take evidence where it leads.”
Two days later, Vanessa was charged with offenses connected to evidence tampering, fraudulent documentation, and the conduct involving Sophie.
The investigation into Julian’s death remained open.
