Chapter 12 - The Locked Drawer

Sophie had found the key inside an old dollhouse.
She knew exactly what it opened.
“Vanessa said never touch.”
She led Ethan upstairs.
Not to Vanessa’s bedroom.
To Sophie’s.
Inside the walk-in closet stood a small decorative cabinet.
Ethan had seen it a hundred times.
Vanessa told him it contained seasonal clothes.
The silver key opened the bottom drawer.
Inside were envelopes.
Photographs.
Copies of Sophie’s medical records.
Printed emails.
A notebook.
Ethan did not touch anything until Detective Ruiz arrived.
The notebook belonged to Vanessa.
Most entries were ordinary planning notes.
Appointments.
Shopping.
Names.
Then the handwriting changed near the middle.
“E travels 16th-21st.”
“S behavior worse when Maria present.”
“Need new evaluator.”
“Trust attorney useless.”
“Claire still emailing.”
One line was underlined twice.
“Control narrative before accusation.”
Ruiz photographed every page.
Then she found an envelope marked JH.
Julian Hart.
Inside were copies of his insurance policy.
A copy of his proposed beneficiary change.
And a letter he had written to Vanessa.
The letter was dated five days before his death.
It was brief.
“I know you accessed my email.”
“I know money is missing.”
“I have copies.”
“I am leaving.”
Claire began crying when she read it.
“He was leaving her.”
Vanessa had always told police Julian was depressed because the marriage was failing.
Now it appeared Julian was the one ending the marriage.
Ruiz found one more object.
A flash drive.
The digital-forensics team opened it.
It contained scanned documents from Ethan’s business.
Personal financial statements.
Estate plans.
And a draft letter supposedly written by Ethan.
Maya read it first.
Her face changed.
“What?”
She handed it to him.
The letter was addressed to Vanessa.
It said Ethan was “struggling emotionally.”
It suggested he was considering taking time away from Sophie.
It implied Vanessa might need temporary guardianship.
Ethan stared at the signature line.
His name appeared there.
Not his real signature.
A digital copy.
Someone had been preparing a document designed to look like Ethan had voluntarily stepped away.
Ruiz looked at him.
“When was this created?”
The forensic specialist answered.
“Four months ago.”
Ethan felt the room tilt.
Four months ago, he and Vanessa had been planning an anniversary trip.
She had been kissing him goodnight.
She had already been preparing for a future in which he might be removed from his own daughter’s life.
Then the specialist opened one final folder.
It contained photographs of medications.
