Chapter 9 - The Price of Betrayal

Ashley stopped pretending after the invoice surfaced.
Through her attorney, she requested a meeting.
Christopher agreed only if it occurred in his office and everything was documented.
I chose to attend.
Ashley walked into the conference room wearing no makeup and carrying a folder.
She looked smaller than I remembered.
I felt nothing.
That surprised me.
For days, I had imagined screaming at her.
Instead, when she sat across from me, she looked like a stranger who happened to have my best friend’s face.
“I’m sorry,” she said.
I waited.
She swallowed.
“Dwight told me Harbor House was going under.”
“That explains fraud?”
“No.”
“Good.”
She looked down.
“He said if the company failed, his parents would lose their home.”
“So you helped him take mine?”
Her eyes filled.
“I thought you would invest voluntarily.”
“You prepared fake documents for my employer.”
“That was after everything exploded.”
“That’s supposed to help?”
“No.”
Christopher interrupted.
“Tell us about the $2,500.”
Ashley took a breath.
“Jared paid me to research the trust.”
My jaw tightened.
“How did Jared know about my trust?”
She looked at Dwight’s name on the paperwork.
“Dwight told him after your first anniversary.”
We had dated for three years.
That meant the family had known for two.
Ashley explained that Jared originally wanted Dwight to ask me for a business loan.
Dwight feared I would refuse.
So Jared proposed something else.
Marriage.
Once married, Dwight believed emotional pressure would make me transfer the money.
Susan would normalize financial contribution.
Gemma would handle paperwork.
Jared would control Harbor House.
Ashley’s role was to learn enough about my trust to tell them when funds could become available.
“And your reward?” I asked.
Ashley started crying.
“Dwight.”
I almost laughed again.
“You betrayed me for a man who was betraying both of us.”
“He told me he was only marrying you temporarily.”
“And you believed that made it better?”
“No.”
For the first time, she looked directly at me.
“I believed what I wanted to believe.”
That was perhaps the only truthful thing she had said.
Then Ashley opened her folder.
“I brought something.”
She slid forward printed screenshots.
Private messages between Dwight and Jared.
One exchange occurred on our wedding night.
Jared: TOMORROW MORNING.
Dwight: SHE’S TIRED.
Jared: BETTER.
Jared: TIRED PEOPLE SIGN.
My stomach turned.
Another exchange appeared forty minutes later.
Dwight: WHAT IF SHE READS THE WHOLE THING?
Jared: SUSAN WILL KEEP HER BUSY.
Jared: YOU JUST GET THE SIGNATURE.
Then the final message.
Dwight: AND IF SHE SAYS NO?
Jared’s reply was three words.
DON’T LET HER.
I closed the folder.
The laundry.
The chores.
The control.
The blocked door.
None of it had been random.
They had been rehearsing obedience.
May you like
And I had ruined the rehearsal on the first morning.
