Chapter 14 - Ashley’s Last Bargain

I refused to give Ashley blanket immunity.
Christopher offered something narrower.
If she provided complete, verifiable evidence and testified truthfully, I would consider limiting damages against her.
No promises.
Ashley accepted.
She arrived with a phone she had hidden from Dwight.
The device contained two years of messages.
Some were romantic.
Some were disgusting.
Some were evidence.
One conversation began six months before our wedding.
Dwight: DAD SAYS WE NEED AT LEAST 900.
Ashley: WILL SHE DO IT?
Dwight: SHE HATES CONFLICT.
Dwight: MOM CAN HANDLE HER.
Another exchange was worse.
Ashley: WHAT IF SHE LEAVES?
Dwight: SHE WON’T.
Ashley: HOW DO YOU KNOW?
Dwight: ONCE SHE’S MARRIED SHE’LL BE TOO EMBARRASSED TO ADMIT IT FAILED.
I felt heat rise through my face.
My loyalty had been interpreted as weakness.
My patience had been interpreted as permission.
My desire to make a marriage work had been included in their financial calculations.
Then Ashley showed us an audio recording.
Jared’s voice filled the conference room.
“Marriage is leverage.”
Dwight answered.
“What if she wants everything separate?”
“Then make her feel married.”
“What does that mean?”
“It means family accounts, family responsibilities, family expectations.”
Susan spoke in the background.
“Once she starts doing things for everyone, she won’t say no to one more thing.”
My hands went cold.
The laundry list.
There it was.
Explained in their own voices.
Susan continued.
“Start small.”
Jared laughed.
“Exactly.”
The hundred dollars was not insulting by accident.
The chores were not unreasonable by accident.
They wanted to establish a hierarchy immediately.
If I accepted humiliation on day one, the financial agreement would follow.
Ashley stopped the recording.
“There’s more.”
She played another file.
Dwight sounded nervous.
“I don’t want anyone touching her.”
Jared replied.
“Then she better listen.”
Dwight did not object.
He only said.
“Don’t do anything stupid before she signs.”
The words landed harder than any excuse he had given afterward.
Perhaps Dwight had not wanted me physically injured.
But his concern had conditions.
Before she signs.
My safety mattered only because I was still valuable.
Ashley covered her face.
“I should have stopped this.”
“Yes.”
She cried quietly.
“I thought nobody was actually going to hurt you.”
“You helped them plan how to corner me.”
“I know.”
Christopher ended the meeting.
The recordings went to investigators.
Then he received another message.
Not from Dwight.
Not from Jared.
From Susan’s attorney.
Susan wanted to cooperate too.
May you like
The family was beginning to turn on itself.
