Chapter 10 - The Forty-Eight Thousand Dollar Lie
Nora finished tracing my wedding contribution one week later.
The result was worse than I expected.
I had transferred forty-eight thousand dollars to a joint account because Dwight told me twenty-eight thousand would cover wedding expenses and twenty thousand would serve as the first portion of our apartment down payment.
There had never been an apartment purchase.
Dwight had shown me a listing.
He had shown me a mortgage estimate.
He had even driven me past the building twice.
But no offer had ever been submitted.
Instead, thirty-six thousand dollars moved almost immediately into Harbor House.
Twelve thousand remained in the joint account to create the appearance that our finances were normal.
Christopher called it fraudulent inducement.
I called it theft with wedding flowers around it.
Then Nora discovered the biggest lie.
Jared had not paid a small portion of our wedding expenses as Dwight claimed.
He had paid nothing.
The $9,000 transfer Dwight showed me as “Dad’s contribution” had come from my own money after being routed through Harbor House.
They had taken my money.
Moved it.
Returned part of it.
And presented it as generosity.
The deception was almost elegant.
Almost.
Except greed had made them careless.
Bank timestamps showed everything.
Christopher amended the divorce complaint.
The civil fraud claim grew.
So did the possibility of criminal investigation.
That afternoon, Harbor House’s lender filed a foreclosure notice against the warehouse.
Their deadline had arrived.
Without my trust, the company could not cover the debt.
Susan began calling relatives.
Soon cousins and aunts I barely knew were messaging me.
Family should forgive.
Marriage requires sacrifice.
Jared made one mistake.
Dwight still loves you.
Nobody mentioned the money.
I blocked every number.
Then Gemma made her move.
She posted a long statement online claiming I had entered the marriage intending to “financially destroy” Dwight’s family.
She described me as wealthy, manipulative, and vindictive.
She accused me of using my trust as a weapon.
For six hours, strangers argued beneath the post.
Then Ryan uploaded one screenshot.
The family group chat.
NO MONEY, NO MARRIAGE.
Gemma deleted her statement.
But Christopher had already preserved it.
The public drama was ugly.
The legal consequences were uglier.
Gemma had discussed documents connected to an active fraud case.
And because she had prepared the Harbor House transfer agreement, her statement gave Christopher grounds to demand her records.
Her laptop was eventually produced through discovery.
Buried inside was a folder labeled LIZ FINAL.
It contained eight versions of the investment agreement.
Seven showed a blank signature line.
The eighth did not.
My name appeared at the bottom.
A perfect-looking signature.
The file creation date was three days before my wedding.
I had never signed it.
